I am going to be replacing the seals in my steering box this weekend. Getting tired of the leaking.

It seems pretty simple but I wanted to check and see if anyone who has done it before has any 'hot tips'.

Any comments appreciated.

It will leak again very soon. The shaft wears and the seals will not reseal properly on the worn shaft. You need to get a rebuilt box, preferrably from meridian who has improved the design to prevent shaft wear. They go for 270 including shipping and return of core shipping.

PS sorry, new seals will work for a while

I have exactly the same problem. The dealer is going to have a look at it next week (i've got it on warrenty). Should i advise them to replace?

How long will a fix last?

Thanks,

Lody

They should replace the box if it leaks from the shaft seal. I would have them get a Meridian rebuilt box rather than new, cheaper and it should last longer.

I replaced my seals, and 10K miles later, no problem.

I brought my 99 Disco in for a leaking box. They put a new one in, they took it for test drive, steering locked up. They then put in another new box, worked fine for the 1st 20 miles, then sprung a leak again. brought it back again, o-ring had split had to be replaced. Picked up the Disco today, leaking from another area on the box, goes back to dealership on Thursday. luckily under warranty but starting to get upset about it.

Just so I can add it to the just in case it breaks file, how can people get in touch with Meridian?

Allen,

Is LR Scottsdale really putting in NEW parts?...I mean, come on already - three new steering boxes and you're still leaking? I though that they had cleaned up their act with a new service manager. I'll bet you're just thrilled...

Did you see that white 1995 Range Rover County LWB on their used lot? It caught my eye and I might have to take the wife over for a test drive. All that room in the back seat is great - it's like a limo! And those Hella 3000's would look great on my Disco...

No Bill, After some magical number of 25,000 miles they will not replace your steering box with a new one. They have to use a rebuilt one. Supposedly per LR. Found that out today. So I had the original for 43000, and then 3 rebuilts put in in a 2 week time frame. Picked it up again this afternoon and will have to wait to see if it leaks again. I did not see that one, lots of good vehicles though. A couple of D90's and lots of used Discos. I met another member of AZLRO there too while picking up my Disco. At least you will still keep the Disco. The last steering box, all the seals were leaking. John the service guy was getting tired of seeing me and my Disco and of course I was tired of going there too.
