I just changed my transfer case oil with 90w oil. I had transfer case whine before, but now after the fluid change it's louder. Would using a heavier weight gear oil, like 145w help quieten the whine some? Thanks in advance for the help.
Thanks
Wee

Wee...

the objective here is to know were the whine is coming from...and not to drown it out (get swampers for that!)

i am not trying to be a smart ass, but the whine can develop to something worse!

just a thought!

I know what you are saying, but I was told that the whine is normal, some Disco's do it and some don't. Actually, the previous owner took it to the dealer and he was told it was the roof rack, whatever. I think they didn't want to fix it under warranty. But it's been like that for like 40k and the Disco runs great. I can live with the little rattle's and stuff but the whine gets kinda annoying.
Thanks
Wee

If you have a 1995 or earlier there is a whine in the transfer case that is normal and irratating. The whine would quicken and slow down with your speed. After 1995 there should not be one. What year is your Disco?

>After 1995 there should not be one (whine).

Rob,

It's a *geared* transfer case!

There will always be some whine. That post-1995 info relates to a different tooth profile, but there will always be some whine. It just depends on how sensitive you are too it.

Anybody know what the lifespan on the LT230 is? Or how they *age* with use/accumulated miles?

An Lt230 should go 200k plus without failure, however they do get louder as the bearings wear and they tend to leak at the output shafts and they get spline wear on the input shaft with the tranny. Failure is almost always a result of stupidity, either not filling up or changing oil or because they drove with the dif locked on pavement.

I have and LT230 with 220K on it, has output shaft leak, but function is great. It whines a bit (94 model), but I keep it filled with good goo.

I think my 95 Disco has an output shaft leak. Its leaking a few drops each night. My mechanic says just to check the fluid everytime i change the oil and I should be ok.

Any thoughts?

filling is usually cheaper (and certainly easier) than fixing. If it is not a major waterfall of oil, then I would just fill until I had to pull for some other reason. Just keep regular tabs on it.

I have a 95 Disco. But I wanted to know if I use a heavier weight oil, will it quieten the whine some? I know that since we are all wheel drive all the time there is gonna be some whine, whenever I drive any vehicle in 4 wheel drive there is a whine. I just wish the Disco's wasn't so loud.
Thanks
Wee

Thanks Ron.

It's nice to know the expected lifespan. Mine is good to go at ~70k, although I want to check the front output bearing for excessive play. It's all part of a super-low speed vibration hunt...

My 96 with 77k just started a speed related whine. It only occurs when accelerating, but it stops when you let off the gas.
