I have a 94 disco. The temperature stays normal when normal driving, however when I use the air conditioning then temp guage goes to HOT. very close to the top of the guage. anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it? if it is a bad thermostat, wouldn't the engine always overheat? thanks in advance!!!

You should verify that the electric fans are working and that the engine is full of coolant first before proceeding.

A poorly maintained or damaged cooling system could fail with the AC on but be OK during normal driving. You may not have a single cause for this, it is very likely that its just a sick cooling system in general.

Fix this ASAP or say 'bye bye' to your engine. Running it hot for just a second takes thousands of miles off its life...esp these engines.

Yes,
And being that it is a 94 you may be due for a water pump and certainly a coolent flush. Check for leaking or play in the water pump bearing (wiggle the end of it)

Had the same problem also.....I found an unbelieveable amount of leaves and other crap trapped between the radiator and AC condenser that is NOT easily visible from either side...without disconnecting anything, undo the 2 metal clamps that hold the radiator in place at the top and push it backwards to clean out.
