My 97 SD has had brake problems since I got it. The problem is the pedal goes 1/2 way to the floor before I start getting any braking and then it is mushy. I have replaced all the pads and turned all the rotors and just replaced the master cylinder. All parts were factory parts. The complete system was also flushed and bled.

Anyone got and other ideas to firm up the pedal?

Agood!
Yeah, I got an idea: What about air in the system? Symptoms really sounds like air, and furthermore you have been working a lot on the system!
It can be quite difficult to get air out of all the lines. Just a couple of days ago a friend of mine had to feed fluid through the bleed-nipples (feed from below) of his Defender to get all the airbubbles out... He managed to borrow the tools from a workshop for free, and got the firm feel of his brakes again.
Hope this helps!

I have had my brakes bled down, up, backwards, forwards and nothing helps. Any other ideas? It is something in the ABS maybe?
Thanks,

The only thing left is a bad caliper(s). Any leaks or loss of fluid?

Ron

PS it is theoretically possible that you have a bad flex hose that is buldging but I doubt it.

if you want a firm pedal replace the rubber brake lines to the calipers with stainless lines.

No other leaks...all is sealed tight. Someone has suggested a bad bypass valve in the ABS....ever heard of it?
