What are the differences and which one would be a better buy?

Don't forget about the RoverTym sliders! www.rovertym.com.
Thanks,

Hi there,
i have installed terrainmaster heavy duty sidesills on my 97 D1 and hard tested them (hanged on rock, lift both side wheels off the ground with a hi-lift put just in the middle...) and my doors are still OK :-)
Theses products are body and chassis mounted (double fixing) and they have a special insert to use a hi-lift.
They are really tough and the guys at terrainmaster are really helpful also.
Hope this will help.
Erik.

I have to echo Erik's comments on the Terrain Master side sills, I researched until I found these units. Very strong construction, mount to the frame and the sill (as most sliders). I regularly use the side sills as jack points, and have had encounters with rocks and no problems at all. You can request a copy of the fitting instructions from Terrain Master to get a better look at how they are constructed. I have pictures somewhere and I'll try to post (or send to Ho for the tech section)later today.

Rovertym sliders bolt completely through the sill, and have an added tube that can be used for side pulls. Very tough.
By nadim on Friday, April 27, 2001 - 03:42 pm: Edit |
E Snyder...
Are you sure that John recomends that you use the 'nerf bars' on his sliders fro recovery?
and...
isn't it an issue to have sliders both chassis and body mounted?

Fine for recovery (from horse's mouth) - that's what I'm goin with - RTE sliders!

Took a look at the Terrainmaster comments- the negative ones are for steering guards- sill guards (the subject of the original pos) get positive ratings.
Personally I give positive ratings to TM winch bumper. Nice piece of kit, solid, better packed than SG and arrived via fedex four days after it left UK for $440. Its gone through a bunch of work for me and a New England winter.
You can't beat their stuff for quality or price
By Landie on Tuesday, May 01, 2001 - 09:16 am: Edit |
I've heard some real bad things about terrain master stuff from a lot of our club members(Red Rose)Bad welds, poor finnish, design faults, poor fit you name it .There also very expensive.
Southdown have a very good name here in the UK.
By Chris Browne on Tuesday, May 01, 2001 - 10:11 am: Edit |
Landie: I was only posting positive vibes about Tm bumpers. I don't have any other TM gear. I do have Southdown guards all the way from front to rear and wouldn't trade them for anything.
In the USA the TM bumper is a bargain.

I will restate something that I feel bears repeating.

John makes some unbelievably good stuff, I have seen it in action and wouldn't go anywhere else.

Chris its not a bargain if it falls apart!
Do you work for terrain master?
By John Graham (John) on Tuesday, May 01, 2001 - 01:57 pm: Edit |
Seems this has turned into the same old, my vendor's stuff is better than your vendor's stuff. Cal - email me off line if you need my opinions on the Terrain Master side sill's I have installed. I am also using the Terrain Master skid plate, with recovery & jack points. As always, what works for some does not always work for others. It is also interesting to note, that with a discussion forum such as this it is easy to post without identifying yourself (just food for thought). I am still happy with the items I have purchased from Terrain Master, and I feel that you should contact them for more information. Good luck.

We would not usualy comment in a debate on different manufacturers products on a forum such as this but with the comments made by Dented Disco on this and other forums namely LRE we felt it time to lay out the facts.Dented Disco from Lancashire in the UK made a statement regards our steering guards which he has every right to do what we find difficult to understand is why if he has a valid complaint he has not contacted us directly despite being invited to on the very forums he posted on.We always respond to customers comments good or bad it is by listening to customers comments that improvements to our product range can be made ,simply to refering to any product as crap solves nothing.Once again I invite Dented Disco to contact us directly to discuss any complaint he feels he has, by not doing so it brings into question the validity of his comments.I thank those of you for your comments on our products on this forum and those sent directly to us.

Hats off Kevin for getting your hands dirty here with us in the real world!
By DentedDisco on Friday, May 04, 2001 - 11:28 am: Edit |
No I have not contacted TM ,for these reasons.
Im happy with the jackmates and would like to keep then, but I cannot fit another make of guard with them in place.
Even if TM where to send me(some chance)another steering guard they are still to thin and not up to the job they are designed for.
I intend to take the guard to a local engineering firm and get then to make me a copy out of 5mm steel plate(more money).
Lets hope TM get there act together and start making steering guards for offroading ,not tesco's carparks.
On this forum TM have questioned the validity of my comments, so in answer I have taken some photos off the said guard and will post then on this and other Landrover forums and let the members decide.

dented disco...
call them, you have nothing to loose, maybe you are doing both you and them a favor, and they will upgrade the thin aluminum guards with thicker ones, not charge you and start selling htese newer ones...
hehehe...i am a dreamer sometimes...

DentedDisco,
If you have problem with a vendor, you should always take it up with them before bashing them high and low on message boards. Give them a chance to remedy the situation, then report the full story. If they were to replace, fix, or give you $$$ back or discounts on other products or something, they are great to deal with. If they sell you something that doesn't perform as advertised and they do nothing about it, then they deserve a good flaming.
Kevin - Like others have said, Kudos to you for jumping in on the conversation. I wouldn't sit idly by and let this go on either.

Who knows who John Doe really is. What the heck no matter. No I don't work for TM. deal daily in Litigation and insurance claims
its high time that I sent Ho a picture two of my truck and listed all the stuff added to it or replacing OEM parts that died
By nadim on Friday, May 04, 2001 - 10:15 pm: Edit |
Chris is absolutely right, especially genuine LR stuff, like their great HD springs, that sag in a fortnight!

Hi to everyone !
I couldn't think there could be such a hot discussion about Sidesills.
As I said in my early post, and Kevin prouved it in posting his message, the team at Terrain Master really rocks !
My sills are incredible and i am proud to have the most far away mounted sills from UK... still dealing with Terrain Master and Kevin was really a pleasure : trust me, when you leave at the other side of the world, on a small island, you are often treated like shit by some sellers...
Anyway, I also ordered from TM other products like the Jackmount and Jackadapt that are really solid and well done.
If I had to say it again : yes they are great manufacturers and sellers.
Regards to all of you from south pacific.
Erik.

Well I've just had a look at TMs web site and it looks like they don't listen, their steering guards are still made of 6mm alloy....DOH!

Robin - have fun with your Southdown equipment, and please post a tech article with pictures when you do the install. This thread has been directed at side sills (rock sliders, etc). Let's stay on the course.....
By DentedDisco on Friday, June 08, 2001 - 01:25 pm: Edit |
Up to the top ...looks like TM are trying to push their crap steering guards again....and there still 6mm. They just dont listen....profit first?
By Blue Gill (Bluegill) on Friday, June 08, 2001 - 01:39 pm: Edit |
They have 5mm steel in the works. I won't be putting any alloy skid plate on my Disco, only steel. I believe that 5mm (0.2") steel skid with 9.5mm (0.375") steel mounting points will suffice.
By Blue Gill (Bluegill) on Friday, June 08, 2001 - 01:40 pm: Edit |
P.S. I'll most likely do my own reinforcement of the 5mm steel skid plate by welding on additional steel in areas to be determined. Thanks for your concern, though DentedDisco
