I have 2 97 Discoveries: On one of them, while taking the wheel off, we stripped a nut and probably will have to drill the nut off. But the wrench apparently was the wrong size. there were 2 nuts that seemed to have been messed up, but this nut didn't come off. Then, we found that on the other Disc, the size of the nut is 1 1/16", which fits the Sears iron wrench. Apparently, on the other Disc, the size is 1 3/32", and nothing seems to fit these nuts. Is this possible? Aren't the wheel nuts standard? Thanks for any feedback.

Thanks, chris. We found out that the one rover has many messed up nuts! Now, where is the cheapest place to buy - below $10 - alloy nuts? We drilled off the bad one, but will have to replace many more

Here's an idea that might help. My lug caps had been rounded somewhat so that neither a 1 1/16" socket nor a 27mm socket would fit. So I pressed my 27mm socket on the nut as far as I could, then put a block of wood over it and used a 16oz framing hammer to encourage the socket to slip over the nut. I was then able to unscrew the lug. Next, I clamped the base of the lug in a vise and was able to pry/work/slide the socket off the lug cap. Then, using a ballpein hammer, I worked the lug on the anvil part of the vise to flatten the "flats" of the cap, so now it fits my 27mm socket like a new lug. Plus it didn't marr the appearance of the cap any. But I may be too late with this response and you might have drilled off all the lugs already...

On a bit of a side note, I rotated my tires yesterday, and bent my lug nut wrench trying to get two of the lugs off! They had been installed with an impact wrench at the garage where I got my inspection done. I'm just thankful this was discovered at home, in the driveway, rather than in the middle of the night in the driving rain while trying to change a flat...

Moral of the story: Install your lug nuts with the equipment you will use to take them off with! If they are installed with the lug wrench that is carried in the truck, they will come off with the lug wrench that is carried in the truck.

Exactly! My tire shop is supposed to torque according to specs so that I can remove wheels with my 18" bar with 1-1/16" socket, but the numbnuts always over-torque. You have to stand there and watch them. What happens when you're 50 miles out in the desert with a flat and can't get the damn lugs off? I guess you can sit on the spare tire and wait for the vultures...

30" galvanized steel pipe 7/8" internal diameter. Can be used as a cheater bar to break off nuts, a sleeve for the rear links or sleeve for the tie rod or the drag link, nice think to have.

Anyone who tightens lugs with a impact wrench should be shot. Does nobody use a torque wrench anymore? I sure have not seen any tire shops use them. At least not correctly.

aren't impact wrenches adjustable for torque? You can slam a lot of twist with an air tool and it seems to me there ought to be some way to adjust them without resorting to the 3/4" drive torque wrench. Tire changer types are hard working and probably paid little so to take time to actually set a torque wrench and use it correctly may be asking a lot.

use a torque wrench on lug nuts, that sounds like a comment from a book engineer. how about bolt stretch measurements instead.

anyway, put anti-seize on studs prior installing nuts, this helps.

Are you kidding me? That's a comment from someone who knows how to wrench. On some cars its very important that the lugs are torqued correctly. And not all cars have similar torque values for the lugs.

Most shops just torque the crap out of one lug and move onto the next. You don't need to be a 'book engineer' to know that's wrong.

There is actually a way to use an impact wrench and achieve proper torque. There is a company that sells these sort of long sockets that are tapered. They have the end that fits on the wrench on one end, then it becomes a solid rod that tapers in the middle the back out to the end that fits the nut. This design allows the socket to twist at a specified torque. you have to buy one for every torque setting but still pretty cool design.

I agree with tomorover, use the wrench you take bush with you, and always ensure that you can loosen the lug nuts whilst it is still in the driveway, that way if you need a persuader bar, you have one.

since I started this discussion, thanks Jon for the tip on the REST OF THE messed up lugs! Will try. I returned the large iron cross wrench from Sears and purchased an Impact 27mm socket along with 3/4" breaker - the $28 long one. That along with a galvanized pipe should take care of any lugs that got impacted!! Hopefully. thanks all.

i dont think wheel nuts are the best for my rover. i use something else. you can find them at your local grocery. they come in a blue package in all different shapes and sizes. they look something like this nuts

i think you and Mr. Peanut have met before. here is a photo of you guys wheelin' by the river. his friends are there too. looks like you guys had a blast. as you can see, he does drive a Disco with a OME HD 2" lift, kinda like yours. he has a specialized roof rack for his nuts.
