When is the Krispy Kreme Challenge East/West ????
By Blue Gill (Bluegill) on Thursday, August 02, 2001 - 07:29 am: Edit |
end of september? who are the players?
By John Lee on Thursday, August 02, 2001 - 09:45 am: Edit |
I think the bigger question is whether the KKC West will happen at all. Is it? I'm not sure that many people are interested in a KKC West.
If it is going to happen, then where and when?
Mike, I think your vehicle would be a good candidate, although I wish that you had wheeled with your RoverTym cones for a while so that you could become familiar with their handling and you could then more easily discern the difference with retained springs.
I'm fine with latter half of September if others are up for it. Of course, this assumes the venue will be close enough to Los Angeles for me to attend. It may not be nor does it have to be.

TRUCKHAVEN
By John Lee on Thursday, August 02, 2001 - 11:38 am: Edit |
Blue,
You KNOW I am up for some Truckhaven action. I haven't been out there in two years because my D90 wouldn't start the night before last year's Poker Run. I'm itchin' to wheel there again, and my trigger finger is equally itchy. Even if the KKCW is held in some other venue, I say those of us in the arid Southwest hook up at Truckhaven for some drinking/wheeling/shooting/wheeling/eating fun.
By John Lee on Thursday, August 02, 2001 - 01:12 pm: Edit |
I just spoke with Jay Allen, and we're thinking September 22nd for a Truckhaven run. How does that sound to you guys? (This is for shooting/wheeling/eating/drinking/smoking and not for a KKC event, unless of course the KKC is going to be held at Truckhaven, which would be cool.)
By Brian on Thursday, August 02, 2001 - 01:25 pm: Edit |
I am not a "player" but i'll def. go out to play. Gas er up and load up the ammo cans!

9/22... damn.... ain't happening for me.
By Blue Gill (Bluegill) on Thursday, August 02, 2001 - 02:35 pm: Edit |
S.W.E.D.S. or K.K.C.W. or both September 22 or thereabouts @ Truckhaven...I'll clear the calendar.
Why not 9/22, Ho - what date would work for you?
By John Lee on Friday, August 03, 2001 - 07:13 am: Edit |
Yeah, let's throw out some dates so that we can find a mutually good time for everyone. Truckhaven just wouldn't be the same without Ho's Grillin' and Chillin' action.
In fact, even if we don't have a KKC West, we can have a copycat Iron Chef duel at Truckhaven featuring Ho against Jay Allen. Theme ingredients would be meat and beer. Ho and Jay would have one hour each to create their culinary delights to feed my stomach.
I'm pretty much free after the Dusy Ershim, which is mid September. Late September onward is fine with me.
By Blue Gill (Bluegill) on Friday, August 03, 2001 - 09:30 am: Edit |
Good ideas all around, John. I'm not so bad when it comes to cooking on the campfire, either, although I've never bothered to wrap scallops in bacon when I'm sitting on a rock - I just cook and shove in gaping hole in face. I'll also be equipped with a fine selection of robust cigars (just burned my box of vintage '93 Macanudos on the boat in SDiego) and good beers and a flask of Mr. Beam. The fact that I'll be well armed and have a Disco strapped to my ass goes without saying.
Weekend (Saturday) dates in Sept/Oct are as follows (with comments):
9/1 - too early
9/8 - too early & I'll be doin the bday gig with family
9/15 - too early & John L. doin the Dusy
9/22 - no Ho

I'm free on all of these dates, and definitely up for it. This sounds like a fun run.
By Brian on Friday, August 03, 2001 - 12:23 pm: Edit |
Any of those dates will work for me.
By Jay Allen on Tuesday, August 07, 2001 - 05:12 pm: Edit |
OK...I am up for the Iron Chef challenge, but remember, I will cheat and will bribe the judges with Agavero. I am free for wheelin, KKCW, or anything else on those dates. I'll be free for just about anything soon....more on that later...
Hope to see all of you soon in that good ole Truckhaven dust- Jay
By Chairman Kaga on Tuesday, August 07, 2001 - 06:30 pm: Edit |
If memory serves me right, there is a little-known faction of Land Rover owners in the Southern California called the Contras.
Nobody knows the exact constitution or extent of the Contra faction. However, what is known about this secret society is that its members routinely revel in hardcore wheeling in the California deserts. The members of the Contra faction are known to wheel well armed, not just with the latest in deadly weapons, but also with a plethora of potent potables and international cuisine.
The Contras have sent their first hitman for the Truckhaven Iron Chef Challenge. Jay Allen, a noted expert in conducting great home barbeques and grilling meats in the field, will electrify the deserts of Southern California with his fine fare.
And accepting the Truckhaven Iron Chef Challenge is Iron Chef Korean Ho Chung, who happens to be a fellow Contra.
Challenger Jay will take on Iron Chef Ho. Both chefs will have one night to create various dishes that best articulate the flavors of the theme ingredient.
But what is the theme ingredient? That is a question for which I currently have no answer. The theme ingredient must be compatible with grilling, for this challenge will be conducted in the field. The theme ingredient must also be compatible with beer, the preferred drink of the Contra faction, and quite possibly with Scotch. I am currently at a loss for what that ideal theme ingredient might be.
Any suggestions?

Too bad I'm in Chicago. This sounds like an event not to be missed. To go with the Korean theme here's what I'd make for the event (and have made on previous trips):
Various types of Bulgogi (rib-eye, spicy pork, chicken)
Korean sides: spinach, bean sprouts, kim chee, etc.
Down this with your favorite beer until the bellies are full. After dinner, sip on some nice single malt scotch with a Romeo y Julieta Churchill. This is a combo that would be hard to beat.

By Ho Chung (Ho) on Wednesday, August 08, 2001 - 07:37 am: Edit |
well, if it'll be a true iron chef format, the theme ingredient shouldn't be unveiled here.
but there at the last minute.
bullgogi? hehehe... i like it just once in a while.
i find the korean dishes to have too strong of a spice, and kills the natural flavor of the beef.
beef is a beautiful thing. the simpler the better.
it's like pimping out a disco with some chrome wheels and flares and bug shields....
By Ho Chung (Ho) on Wednesday, August 08, 2001 - 07:51 am: Edit |
red meat.... what kind you have in mind?
actually, i am not sure if i am worthy enough to be a challanger in this battle.
jay allen has lots of training.
his knowledge of seafood and beef, i jsut can't beat it.
he can use seafood to accentuate the flavor of may various beef types.
all i can do is plain beef.
By Jay Allen on Wednesday, August 08, 2001 - 08:05 am: Edit |
I have a good idea, instead of Iron Chef challenge, we can just have a big party out there, a Roverfest West, or KKCW, or KFC or something. I am really looking forward to meeting all of these people.-Jay
By John Lee on Wednesday, August 08, 2001 - 08:08 am: Edit |
Well, perhaps we can have a surf and turf battle. Jay can get the surf and can prepare whatever kind of seafood he wants. Ho can get the turf and can pepare his grilled tri-tip beef.
I'm, er, uh, I mean Chairman Kaga, is up for anything. Heck, even if there is no grilling action on this trip (gasp!), the Truckhaven run should be lots of fun. I hate to make Jay and Ho work the grill while all I do is eat and drink. Lots of wheeling and lots of shooting and lots of beer should be enough by themselves for us to have a great time.
But wheeling with Ho without grilling is sort of like going to Vegas and not gambling. On our last run to John Bull, Ho broke out this: http://www.expeditionexchange.com/johnbull1/DCP_1651.jpg. That thick layer of fat on that piece of tri-tip got real crispy on the grill and was pretty tasty. The fat oozed into the meat and made it pretty tasty as well. Forget sitting around the campfire. Several of us just stood around the table and admired the fat.
Just imagine washing down that fatty tri-tip with several ice-cold Coronas. Then, when you're stuffed with beer and meat, imagine shooting the shit with buddies around the campfire while drinking Scotch and smoking cigarettes and and your favorite cigars. That's what wheeling Contra style is all about.
Vamos a la dusty trails of Truckhaven!
By Ho Chung (Ho) on Wednesday, August 08, 2001 - 08:12 am: Edit |
hehe, well then...
when?
10/13? is that friday 13th again?
By Blue Gill (Bluegill) on Wednesday, August 08, 2001 - 08:14 am: Edit |
Extra crispy KFC
Personally, I like to grind up my own top sirloin and pack it into burger patties for the fastest trouble-free camping cuisine. A little sharp cheddar, merlot, and a Cohiba with some quality imported dark beer as chasers and I'm set. A good filet or NY strip may be more appropriate for the Iron Chef Challenge, though.
Either way, I think Jay is on the right track with his last post...

Bill,
Don't be misled by all of this food talk. My theme ingredients for that weekend will be 12-gauge, .223, and 9mm.

damn, Ho - fine meat, a table, and everything? I'm not worthy. The Chairman is making me hungry with his description. I thought I was fancy with pork chops, but utensils consisted of Mag light and Spyderco:

By John Lee on Wednesday, August 08, 2001 - 10:27 am: Edit |
And look at that cheese on the burger. That cheese looks as if it's from RoverTym or something. It's just so, well, strong looking. They weren't too generous on the beans there either.
That's all you get for your $200 entry fee? Truckhaven is going to be so much better than this, and it's free too.
By Brian on Wednesday, August 08, 2001 - 10:37 am: Edit |
Hey John, are we going 3-gun format? What about beautiful .308? 12ga, .308, .45, now we're talking! Oh, and don't forget the .22!
FYI, bring a copy of your ca DOJ assault weapon registration if it applies.

By John Lee on Wednesday, August 08, 2001 - 10:52 am: Edit |
Brian,
On second thought, I just realized there isn't enough room in the milk truck to carry two long guns. Would you rather shoot rifle or shotgun at Truckhaven? It sucks trying to do both. By "shotgun", I mean clay target wingshooting. Bill, you have any preference? Let me know what you guys prefer; I'm up for any kind of shooting.
By Ho Chung (Ho) on Wednesday, August 08, 2001 - 11:14 am: Edit |
John, are you sure you dont' want to charge a fee?
this is our chance to be millionares!
gun talk again? maybe i shouldn't go.
By Brian on Wednesday, August 08, 2001 - 11:14 am: Edit |
You can strap one to your hilift. That'll save space! Seriously, I was thinking of bringing my M1A, G-19, and 10-22. I don't want to bring any more than 3 if i don't have to. If you don't want to bring your benelli, i'll bring mine, but yours is better suited for clay.
Brian
By John Lee on Wednesday, August 08, 2001 - 11:26 am: Edit |
The rifles and pistols will be fun for shooting cans on the ground and the abandoned vehicles, but shotguns might be better just because there will be less stray round hazard. We should have the entire place to ourselves, but one never knows. Some girl scout troop could be camped over the next rise some round might ricochet off the ground and go flying or something.
Your M1A's round will fly an awfully long way. How about we limit it to shotguns and rifles and no centerfire rifles? Your 10-22 is fine.
By Brian on Wednesday, August 08, 2001 - 11:46 am: Edit |
I don't plan on shooting .308 without a solid background. There's lots of places in truckhaven with sand hills and walls to shoot into so it should be safe and fun. No steel core/jacket ammo with help too.
As for the girl scouts, they be long gone after they see us coming!

I have no preference. It's all good. I have to investigate People's Republic of California gun laws some more, but anyone know off-hand if I can bring my Ruger Mini-14 with folding stock and 30-round mags (.223)? It lights up the night very nicely.
and Ho, soggy burgers? C'mon, give me some credit...

it'd be bad press to wipe out a Brownie troop.

oh blue, i wasn't talking about your pork chops.
i was talking about soggy burgers in general...
By Blue Gill (Bluegill) on Wednesday, August 08, 2001 - 12:15 pm: Edit |
when you're hiking a few miles in the snow, tables, chairs, pots & pans, etc don't make the cut! A venue like Truckhaven will literally let you bring tons of stuff. I'm all for it (except for the HD Cheese).
By John Lee on Wednesday, August 08, 2001 - 12:49 pm: Edit |
Brian - even with a solid backstop, there's a chance of a .308 round doing the magic bullet Kennedy thing and flying a mile away into a girl scout troop, as remote as that possibility may seem. Truckhaven is a barren place, but one never knows. I just think pistols and shotguns will be safer while giving plenty of fun. I want to see what some slugs will do on the abandoned vehicles out there.
Blue - I'm not so sure about your Mini 14 being legal in California. I doubt you can own one, but transporting one might be a bit different. If you and Brian are stuck on riflery during this trip, then why don't we abandon the shotguns and I'll bring a centerfire rifle with me and we can plug the vehicles with rifles instead. You can borrow my HK93 and shoot it all you want if you like.
By Blue Gill (Bluegill) on Wednesday, August 08, 2001 - 01:17 pm: Edit |
I'm cool with whatever. I'll do a little more research, but I won't bring the Mini if it looks at all doubtfull (hate to get confiscated, you know?). I'll probably just have my HKUSP40 and maybe my SigP230 too.
What dates are we looking at now?
By Brian on Wednesday, August 08, 2001 - 01:34 pm: Edit |
With a solid backstop it's hard to predict the magic bullet for any round. I personally think shooting .308 at coffee cans into sand is safer than shooting clays in the air. What is the effective range of birdshot anyway?
Regardless, we're all SAFE shooters and don't do chow yun fat moves with a beer in one hand and a 92fs in the other.
I think we should plan for everyones comfort level. I would like to bring along my M1A to test out a new muzzle brake but if it's too much, its no prb for me to leave it at home.
It's all good with me...
Blue, I am pretty sure you CAN NOT bring you mini-14 into ca. configured like that. Lose the folder, get some 10rd mags, and sleeve that flash hider and you should be fine. Ahhh your mini14 brings back memories of the A-Team.
Brian
By John Lee on Wednesday, August 08, 2001 - 01:40 pm: Edit |
Let's go with rifles and pistols then. Trying to mix different long gun types in a single shoot is like having Ho's tri-tip with chardonnay. Perish the thought! Chairman Kaga would not be pleased.
Bill - I would play it safe and leave the Mini 14 at home. Why play with fire for no good reason. You can shoot my HK93 all you like.
For dates, I'm wide open and agreeable to anything.
Viva!

By John Lee on Thursday, August 09, 2001 - 06:34 am: Edit |
OK, let's set the date for this sucka. The weekend of October 12-14 was previously considered. How about setting that weekend for certain?
I'm definitely free that weekend and Ho is most likely free as well. I hope everyone else is too. Any objections to that weekend?
I was thinking that all of us could cut work early on Friday afternoon and drive out to Truckhaven. Then, we'll meet in Truckhaven and grill on Friday night. Festivities will probably go on well into the night, so even latecomers probably won't miss too much.
On Saturday, we'll awake to the sounds of .223's blasting away and then wheel and shoot all day. Then we'll camp out Saturday night as well, but the food will be standard trail fare and no haute cuisine.
Sunday morning, we'll leave Truckhaven.
How does that sound to everyone? Our usual runs consist of camping out on Friday night, wheeling on Saturday and then driving home Saturday afternoon/evening. We usually do this to permit people to spend Sunday recovering or going to church or spending quality time with the family or cleaning up or whatever. But Truckhaven is a bit farther for everyone than most venues, so I was thinking that it would be better if people could do their long drives refreshed and rested rather than bone tired and half drunk.
Let me know what you guys think.
By Brian on Thursday, August 09, 2001 - 07:10 am: Edit |
I am in for that weekend...or any weekend for that matter...
Brian
By Blue Gill (Bluegill) on Friday, August 10, 2001 - 05:50 am: Edit |
Sounds cool to me. I'll probably vacate Phx Thurs afternoon and see what kind of trouble I can get into between here & there. What's the word on camping @ Truchhaven? Any advance notice needed? permits? fees? check in with Mom @ the gate? etc?
By John Lee on Friday, August 10, 2001 - 06:01 am: Edit |
Hmmm, good question. Up to now we've just driven out there and camped out. I don't think permits are required, but I'll check.
I also think I waypointed the Twin Palms camping area (now called One Palm because some jerk burned down one of the palm trees). I'll check on that one too.
By Jeff Bieler (Mrbieler) on Friday, August 10, 2001 - 06:11 am: Edit |
I think to camp you need an "Adventure Pass", but I'm not 100% sure. If you do, it's only a few bucks a day and you can get them at the gate at most places. I'm not against reasonable usage fees. So long as the OHV's are profitable, it makes the arguements to keep them open that much stronger.
I'd like to try to join you guys, but we will see how the world is turning at that point.
By Ho Chung (Ho) on Friday, August 10, 2001 - 06:16 am: Edit |
the several times i been there, i never was asked for permits.
there' snobody there to enforce anything anyways.
just show up, you all got guns, so, why worry about permits? LOL
By Blue Gill (Bluegill) on Friday, August 10, 2001 - 06:32 am: Edit |
I have no prob payin perm fees, and I also have no prob NOT payin perm fees...just don't want to give the man a reason to hassle my Rover-induced buzz. Gotta love the gov't logic: lay some asphalt, put up fences, build a guardhouse, buy a park truck, hire a ranger, then charge fees to pay for it all. Of course, when places are overrun by idiots, control & order become necessary - but when I encounter idiots in the wild I take care of it myself, I don't take a plate # and then whine to Ranger Rick. Do Jay & Ho have their Chef's licenses? Hate to get cited for preparing haute cuisine without a permit How far gone is CA - are mags with more than 10-rounds still legal (talking about the USP, forget Mr. T )?
By Jeff Bieler (Mrbieler) on Friday, August 10, 2001 - 06:41 am: Edit |
Bill,
The way I look at fees is the way I wish we had something like the Ben Avery Range here in California. Yeah, it's state run, but it's clean, it's relatively secure, has reasonable fees, and it's not a million miles away in the mountains.
If that's what it takes to get things open, I'm willing to belly up to the bar.
Keep you +10 rounders at home. It's not worth the potential hassel. Especially from out of state.
By Blue Gill (Bluegill) on Friday, August 10, 2001 - 06:54 am: Edit |
Then I must come with only the Sig .380 - no PC mags for the HK. That ain't right. I can't not bring the USP. These are original factory mags purchased with the weapon back in the pre-pussy days (1995). Aren't I grandfathered in?
By Jeff Bieler (Mrbieler) on Friday, August 10, 2001 - 07:25 am: Edit |
I'm not up to speed on out of state regs. I think you're OK, but....
If someone else who knows a more then the next to nothing that I do, please jump in.
I only shoot 'dem Govment models. Ain't got more den 7 rounds...
By John Lee on Friday, August 10, 2001 - 07:29 am: Edit |
I'll check on the permit thing, but I believe Truckhaven is wide open. It's basically a wasteland and not a park like Anza Borrego. I've never seen any signs or gates with permits or trail passes on them. I also haven't seen the cashboxes as you often see at various trailheads.
Jeff - You're more than welcome to join us for some Iron Chef Truckhaven action. Please come if your schedule permits.
Blue - I think you're fine with the hi-cap mags. They're not illegal to own, just illegal to transfer. I have quite a few hi-cap mags myself. I have nothing but hi-cap mags for the HK93, so you won't be alone if you bring the hi-cap USP mags. Just leave Mr. T at home.
By Jeff Bieler (Mrbieler) on Friday, August 10, 2001 - 07:41 am: Edit |
Thanks John. I would like to attend and if all goes well, I'll be in the Series truck so it might take me a while to get there. ;-)
I think the hi-caps will be OK too. I've never really been clear how they determine if you bought pre or post ban.
If I can go, I'll probably just bring my .45, the Mini-14, and either a .303 Enfield or my Garand.

We don't need adventure passes out in truckhaven. It's kinda like the "badlands" south of anza borrego.
Hicaps are fine, just as long as its not marked with "LEO or Export only" on them.
We need to make sure we have enought ear and eye pro too for everyone.
As for targets, I don't think it'll be a problem coming up with A LOT of empty beer cans!

"I've never really been clear how they determine if you bought pre or post ban."
Jeff - I don't believe it's possible to tell on the older magazines. The post-ban mags are marked LEO or whatever, but the preban mags are unmarked. HK mags are all date coded with HK's alpha-numeric code, but the vast majority of all preban mags are not marked for date of manufacture.

Mike,
Please do try to make it. I don't how many of you Bay Area people own guns , but bring them if you got them.
Glad to hear that you're happy with the EE retainers. Test them out very hard and please bring them out to Truckhaven. Actually, I'm thinking that almost everyone who's going to be at Truckhaven with long-travel suspension will be running retained. I'll invite another D90 buddy of mine with the Rockware stuff. He's into guns as well and his suspension should provide some comparisons to running retained. If we are fortunate, we will get a chance to compare.
I hope to see you there. Viva!

Jeep thing? JEEP THING? This ain't no Jeep thing. This is a CONTRA thing.
Will dinner consist of franks and beans? No way. We'll be dining (not simply eating) on grilled tri-tip and bacon-wrapped scallops. Will the potent potables consist of Bud and Coors? Heck no. Corona, Tecate, Anchor, and whatever everyone else likes to drink will suffice for the beers, and after dinner we will drink single-malt. Will we plinking with Rugers? No way. We'll be getting some Heckler und Koch action. Will we be driving some XJ's, TJ's, CJ's, etc? Naw. Vehicles will be Disco's, D90's, and Rangies.
This is Iron Chef. This ain't Ready Set Cook.

Actually John, I'll mostly likely be in a Series truck, will be bringing my Government model and a Garand, so it's pretty much "old school" design from this end of the internet. As for the drinks, I've been on a Dr Otis kick for a little bit.
But as for the rest.... "Yeah! What he said!"

"Sounds like a jeep crowd to me"
oooohhhh! they sound like fighting words to me.
heads up!

Jeff, by all means, bring the 1911 and the M1. I haven't shot a Garand in a few years now (I don't own one but a shooting buddy has one) and they're definitely fun to shoot.
I'll probably bring just the P7 and the HK93, so it'll be the minor calibers for me and the major calibers for you.
By Jeff Bieler (Mrbieler) on Monday, August 13, 2001 - 05:46 am: Edit |
Should be fun regardless. I've never shot a DA pistol or a rifle with a pistol grip.
By Brian on Monday, August 13, 2001 - 06:12 am: Edit |
Jeff, the P7 is closer to a SA. If you want, I can bring my P220(DA .45) to compare to your 1911.

Thanks for the offer, but please don't make anymore work for yourself. I figure with all the stuff that people are talking about, there will be some nice stuff to take a look at.
I fired a 9MM Glock once, but didn't like it at all. I had much better success firing a 9MM Browning HP. I've always had a hard time getting my mits around hi-cap pistols with long trigger reaches.
The closest I have come to firing a rifle with a pistol grip is firing a Bren LMG.
By John Lee on Monday, August 13, 2001 - 10:36 am: Edit |
Jeff,
Brian is correct, although he didn't take it far enough. The P7 is a SA design. No DA capability whatsoever. I'll also bring my USP Compact. You can shoot that if you prefer the DA/SA guns, which I don't.
The rifles with pistol grips are no biggie. I actually prefer the traditional rifle stock design as on the Garands. I think the rifle points better with both hands on the same vertical plane. The StG44 had a pistol grip on it and the world copied the crappy pistol grip design. Now we're stuck.

Jay I'll be in seattle the 24th of this month. I am free otherwise...unless the wife puts the shackles on me.
Anyway, what did you have in mind? Miller jeep, Wildomar(in your neck o the woods, no?) Truckhaven, Anza Borrego?
Brian
By Jay Allen on Monday, August 13, 2001 - 02:00 pm: Edit |
Well,,, I'd like to do my yearly Miller Jeep run soon. Maybe Sep 8th? As far as Wildomar is concerned, no way. I have been there for our dealer events maybe close to 100 times, no kidding. And it's not all that tough. Anza is still burning hot. Maybe somewhere else? -jay
By Brian on Monday, August 13, 2001 - 02:16 pm: Edit |
i am up for anything. Miller Jeep on Sept 8th sounds like a plan.
There's also red Rock, Jaw Bone, and last chance canyons. Never been, but I know SCLR has been there several times.
