Just wondered if anyone from the DiscoWeb is going to the Sept 14-16th Big Dog Jambo VI in Winchester, VA. Check out www.BigDogOffroad.com. From what I hear, it is comparable to Tellico and Paragon. Sounds pretty gnarly, and I need fellow Disco back-up! Not completely sure I'm going, because I haven't confirmed how many slots they have left. But if they have open slots left, I'm there, along with a bunch of Cruisers :-(
Let me know.

I'm in Charlottesville, I'll be going up either Thursday or Friday nite. Staying through Sunday.
Email me directly and I can give you a cell number. I'm not sure exactly where the place is, but I just need to look it up on their site. Are you paying the fee to ride?

Going more for the camping then the trails. Seems the trails over here get pretty boosted up by word of mouth. Then you show up and its pretty lame...So we are going with an open mind..

Yeah, you're right. Wrong weekend. Maybe you'll want to go back after you scope out the trails? Let me know what you think of them. I didn't sign up for the REALLY evil sounding ones...

I know some people from a Jeep board that go to these all the time. I have seen quite a few pictures of the trails. Some of them look pretty hard to me. Could just be me though.

I was just there for the weekend. I rode in a well set-up 80 series cruiser on Friday, on a 7a trail (scale goes from 3-10). He could not finish the trail. No disco that I've seen could have, without major body damage. I drove a 4 trail on Sat, and escaped with minor body damage. My truck is not a monster, but is fairly well set-up for a Disco. I didn't really have trouble, but it was tough, and technical. The trails are cut by Jeeps, and very narrow. I helped rescue a friend who was in a 40 series cruiser, with 35s, air locker, 4.88 gears, etc. from trail 8. It was INTENSE. He made it, with some roof damage. My general impression is that I felt fairly inadequate in my Disco. My friend's 80 series had a good bit of body damage from a 6a trail on Sat. I know Discos are made for a different type of off-road experience, but is very humbling to see what some of those big boys and their trailer queen Jeeps and Cruisers can do. And I hate to admit it, but I saw some daily driver Jeeps doing some amazing shit. Those damn Jeeps. I'll try to post some pictures.
I also spoke with the people who operate the campground that owns the land. They said they would be open to a Rover club sponsoring an event. I think their main requirement would be the club providing insurance. They kind of chuckled when I said Rovers, because they had recently had an experience with LandRover Alexandria, where a group of rovers went on a 4 trail, had lots of damage, and thought it should have been ranked a 7 or 8! Anyway, the possibility of setting up a rover event is there. There is plenty of wheeling to go around. The campground is beautiful, with lots of different areas to camp, a lake with swimming, bath facilities, etc. They have over 3000 acres.
Email me directly if interested in an event there. I'm going to talk to ROAV and BRLRC about it as well. The campground is called Cove Campground, and it is in Gore, Va. The website is www.vvalley.com/cove. I haven't checked it out.

Enoch, were you riding in the Red Toy FJ that (I think the guys name was) Nick. I'm looking at pictures that some people took of Big Dogs and there is a really nice built Red Toyota.
By E Snyder on Wednesday, September 19, 2001 - 12:18 pm: Edit |
No, I was in a dark green 80 series toyota. My friend's FJ is zebra striped. It looked pretty small compared to some there. The red FJ was one of two that were there. One won the "best of the best" rock crawling competition. I've got some pictures I need to develop and post.

Heather and I went into 7a alone while Rob and Al were doing a bit of scouting in another direction. There is some rough shit there but most can be done carefully in a disco. Very carefully... You surely cant run in there at the speed those boys do..
