I will organize a trip to Hollister Hills Northern California the weekend after the first big storm of this winter. If you have ever been to Hollister Hills in winter, you know how fun it is (rubber boots a must). This off road park has miles of flexy trails and optional mud holes. I am a member of the Northern Calif. Rover Club and will call members of the club as well. I will supply deli style platters for about ten to fifteen people, but you should pack a lunch too (this is not a hillbilly keger, this is the thinking persons off road social!). Please send me your email (I will keep it private and use BCC) so I can start a date notification list. I would also like to know who is stock, who has MT tires, winch etc. This trip will wait for the big rain, not some little drizzle. I will also keep this post updated and near the top of the events list.

See you soon!

Michael Sewell

P.S. Kids are welcome

Is trip and park OK for offroad beginners with a stock disco?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By SamS on Monday, October 22, 2001 - 04:46 pm: Edit

I am in....Mike D1. As for stock rovers...i went earlier, dry season, no problems for all blue trails, 1 black. The mud will cause various problems for everyone. But with a group, there should be enough resources to get anyone out of any difficult situation.

I keep seeing the sky get gray, but it still burning off in the afternoon.

Mike,

Yes, all are welcome. I have a half dozen signed up already (after only 24 hours). Several are new to off road driving. I have 10 years or so, and I will try to get an old timer (experience not age) from our club (www.norcalrover.org) . I will also see if Ho Chung or John Lee from this site would come up from S. Calif. for the day. It would be great for those new to wheeling if we had some in field lessons on mud driving, winching etc. There are all levels of trails and we will probably split into two or more groups. I am hoping to keep it to 30 trucks max. There is one trail at Hollister that takes about an hour to go 1/4 mile dry. I want to run it muddy. It's a three wheels on the ground trail. There are very tame trails to Gonzo body crushing stuff I will not take my very off road ready non-stock 97. Something for everyone!

Mike:

Yes, I would like to attend. Let me know in advance as much as possible. The calendar is pretty booked. But if I'm open I'll bring Smiley, 96 Safari Gard equipped disco, and my mud gear wear and recovery gear. Hope all is well. John Baudendistel

I guys!

It will be nice to see you hard core Northern Calif. Rover Club members! For those of you that missed Downieville it was nice. Not as hard as Blue Lakes but you missed the best scenery of any club trip! And you missed my beautiful 95 pound wife! I see this as a rover trip to Hollister, if any of you want to bring your D90s, 110s or 88s it's fine. We Disco owners will be happy to pull you out when you get stuck!

Hi Guys,

It looks like we might have some serious rain this week. I will call Hollister and see if the park is open and if the rain is hitting down at Hollister as much as it is over the rest of the Bay Area. If it's a good hard rain we might want to go this weekend. Saturday might be the first weekend day after the first big storm of 2001. I will email again midweek.

Think rain, think mud.

Disco Webbers;

I will be going to Cow Mt OHV area on Saturday 11/3. Cow Mt. is 50,000 acres and has a huge network of trails (Hollister is only 5,000). It is 5 miles East of Ukiah (2 hours from SF) I have wheeled there only once and will be exploring the area. I will be running some intermediate and advanced trails. If you are interested, please RSVP me via email. I will be leaving the Shell gas station at the bottom of the Central San Rafael exit off Hwy 101 in San Rafael at 8AM sharp. If you would like to caravan up to Cow Mt. PLEASE EMAIL ME. I need to know who is attending. I will send directions if you need them. I will be on CB channel 7 or if that is in use I will be on channel 3 while on 101 and at Cow Mt. It looks like a great day Saturday and the area just got a lot of rain. I am still planning the trip to Hollister after the big rain!

Hope you can make it, please email if you can go.

Mike D1
michael@visualpursuit.com

PS. Stock trucks are fine, most hard trails have a bypass for the gonzo stuff.

Just an update,

I am up for driving off road this Saturday and I don't care if it's Hollister or Cow Mt.. I only have one person that has said yes to Cow Mt. due to the drive. This person can also make Hollister. There are one or two more that have said yes to Hollister. Several have said yes to Saturday but they have not responded since. I want to make it work for people, so I will be at Hollister (main gate ranger station) as early as I can, 9AM?? We will be on CB ch. 7 or 3. I will not supply food for this trip, so bring a lunch and snack + water. I will stay all day I think (5pm). PLEASE EMAIL me if you can make it, I would like to know who to look for. Stock trucks are welcome, you may need to bypass some small parts of some trails.

See you at Hollister tomorrow.

Michael

Is there going to be a real mud trip to Hollister?? I had some comp problems and missed this past weekend. I would still like to try some wet stuff....

Sam,

Yes we will, waiting for rain. We had a great time last weekend. It was the first time meeting people from Dweb for me. We had five trucks show up and it was a very nice group of guys. It looks like rain this weekend, rain in SF does not translate to rain at Hollister. We shall see. Do I have your email?

Mike,

You should have my email...I was on the DL last week, but IT had me out of the loop.

I saw the forcast for the North Bay looks promising, but the South Bay looks dry??

Thanks for the update...and I know that there are a lot of rovernuts out here..with a little motivation we should get them out and about.

Sam

Check out some great photos by Ken Nishikawa from our "dry" trip to hollister. Most of this is from one trail, the "Disco Flexo trail" that is about a 1/4 mile long and takes 1.5 to 2 hours (dry) to run. http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4292279691&cod You must put in the code "disco" . Nice photos Ken!

Is anyone planning on hitting Hollister Hills? I think this last storm was big enough to warrant a trip. If anyone is going, please drop a line on this link. By the way, I drive a '95 Bronze Disco around the East Bay, specifically the Dublin/Pleasanton area. Wave or honk if you happen to see me. There just isn't as much LR comradery now as when I first purchased my Disco.

Chris,

I would be interested in going this weekend. I have a basic stock disco, but it needs to be challenged.

PS I do wave. Matter of fact, on my way back from Portland Or I waved at at least a dozen rovers. None waved back. I did promote discoweb to a Disco owner while in Portland. Should see him on here in the next few weeks!!

Happy Holidays Disco owners,

It's looking good for the "First Annual Disco Mud Run Party".
Hollister Hills SVRA reports significant rain over the last few days. As promised, I will provide deli platters and some drinks at the event. This weekend is the first opportunity to go after the first big rain storm of 2001. Sunday is the day most people have liked on past trips. It will be from 9 AM to 5 PM (do part or all of the day). We will be learning new driving skills in mud, winching etc. All trails and challenges are optional. Stock trucks are welcome. Rain gear, rubber boots are a must. Recovery gear and recovery points are nice to have in mud, please bring it if you have it. Please let me know via email if this SUNDAY DECEMBER 2 is a go for you!
