When I went to check fluids this morning, the gear box was low and the t-box was a little high (maybe 3oz poured out the inspection hole).

Apparently, the seal between the gear box and t-box is leaking as it looks like gear oil is moving to the t-box. I assume it's the seal behind the gear box oil thrower. I checked the breather on the gear box (small hole in the inspection plate), but could not locate one on the t-box.

Is anyone aware of a decent write up on the steps to fix? The Green Bible has me a bit lost on what I need to do here. I've heard it can be done with the t-box in place.

It's been suggested that I replace the gear box breather (the pin hole in the top cover) with an axle breather/banjo bolt to lower the pressure that is causing the gear box oil to move to the t-case. I've also been told it's a good idea to add a breather to the t-box.

Is there enough metal in the cover plates to drill and tap for a breather? An easy off the shelf solution would be rear D90 breathers. They are cheap, exit to the side (versus front breathers which exit the top).

Thoughts? Comments?

There is enough metal to drill and tap a breather either 3/8" or 1/4" NPT. (At least in a SIII) If you do deep wading a good idea is to extend the breather with a brass barb, and rubber hose to the engine compartment or other high up area.
