Finally, it's finished...
I told David that if he found a Pink Panther while he was in England to bring one back for me... and he did, only it was in a box, and all black-molded plastic. Turned out okay, though...

I like the mud.
Also, what color model paint will you use for the tiny drops of oil?
By Leslie N. Bright (Leslie) on Monday, October 29, 2001 - 01:05 pm: Edit |
Not paint, I'll use some used 10w40 I have waiting to be taken to the recycling....
I've actually got a couple of shades of mud on it.... darker, thick chunky stuff down low, with the light, dried splatter-stuff higher...
I spray-painted the body flat green first, then took white paint and mixed a bit of red into it to make the pink. Then, after painting the panels pink, I went back and sanded/chipped off bits of the pink so that it really looked like an MOD that was resprayed...
I'd played around w/ a couple of models as a kid, but usually ended up packing them with M-80s and headless Darth Vaders... BOOM! This is the first one where I actually had any patience to spend the time to try to get it to actually look like a little Rover....
Plus, I actually 'know' what a Rover's supposed to look like... with military planes, etc., it was a lot of guess-work.... I've even got yellow and red knobs on the floorboard levers in it....
Even the rear diff cover is yellowy-white (MOD 109s had a little light mounted under the rear bumper that shined a weak light onto the rear diff, so that the vehicle behind it in a convoy could follow the truck by looking for the diff... cut down on stray light giving away a convoy to overhead airplanes)....

Very nice. The pleasure is in the details.
I'm partial to the firepower mods....

Swap that salisbury rear out for a correct rover rear. Then it will be perfect
Nice job L!

Ron,
Just found a neat page: http://www.lightingfx.co.uk/EMLRA/vehicles/special/pinkpanther.htm
It's a '67 3/4-ton special MOD truck, and is modified... this page actually says "Think on how many axles give up the ghost on a civvy landrover! At least the Panthers had Salisbury's."
FYI....

If I was really rich, I'd have one of these to drive to Rover rallyes.... totally impractical, but wonderful nonetheless....

Leslie - someone in BRLRC just recently got one (a real one) just for that purpose - though I think the same people have about 20 other Rovers - must be nice!

I'll see if I can find the copy of the last BRLRC newsletter - if I find it, I'll mail it on to ya.
The owners are from Parkersburg, WV
