There's a 1971 Series IIA, for around $2500. Rusted frame, and needs restoration pretty badly.
Is this a good deal ? I live in Portland, Or and I can't find one around here...
I have access to a Discovery Frame, and all running gear. How bad would it be to put the SII on the Disco frame ?

Andy, IMO it's worth travelling quite some distance to get a clean Series truck.
If the frame is rusted, $2500 is too high, even if it is complete.
To put a Series body onto a Disco chassis, you will have to cut off the existing framemounts and would need to install correctly-placed bulkhead outriggers. Given that the Series is either an 88" or a 109" wheelbase, and the Disco is 100", you will have to either stretch or chop the rear tub to fit the frame, or have to stretch or chop the frame to fit the body.
IMO, don't jump on this one. Let the fella know that you're interested, but that he's asking too much. If someone else comes along and buys it at that price, well, more power to them, and they've saved you from spending too much. Keep looking for a better one. After awhile, if that one hasn't sold, the seller may very well have to come down in price if you haven't found a better one by then.
Be patient, grasshopper... don't jump into a bad Series Rover, you want to make sure that you don't get into something more than you really want to do.
Best o' luck!

How bad?

You are in portland?
Try finding Micheal Slade, Timm Cooper, I think also the Shubacks (sp) are in the area and ask them if they know any available.

Yeah, I've talked to Timm, but not about finding a truck, just the how's and what's. How am I supposed to find the Shubacks ?

So....you're saying it's a good deal or what ?
By Ron on Wednesday, November 21, 2001 - 03:23 am: Edit |
The bulkhead looks REALLY bad
also the body is not strait.
It does not run either. I would be hard pressed to tell you it is worth more than 1000.
Does have a Kodiak heater, all the correct lights and Fairy FWHs.
Does it have an OD? If not it is worth 500-1000 tops.
Just my opinion though. If you love it the 800 extra you would have to pay and not have to find another one could make it worth it to you.

Rusted frame, rusted bulkhead, not running....
Not a special Rover, just a late 88" IIa ('69-'71), no goodies.....
I'll concur w/ Ron, $1000 would be generous. Actually worth less; $500 would be a more honest price, but if he started at $2500 I doubt you'll get him down that far... not unless his wife is saying that it HAS to go and your $500 is the only offer made...
Make a $500 offer, then keep shopping. If you find a better one, great; if he sells it to you for $500, you've not started out in the hole as bad on it.
Good luck!

I wouldn't call that a rusted bulkhead. I'd call that rust in the shape of a bulkhead. What's the frame look like? The same?
But it still "looks" good, if you know what I mean...
By Andy Nix (Andy) on Wednesday, November 21, 2001 - 12:40 pm: Edit |
Well, it's a $1000 and it'll cost me $800 to ship.
It runs and drives fine btw. I need to give him an answer today, so KEEP POSTING !!!!

No smoke? gearbox does not pop out of gear?
no vibes, whines or knocking? Brakes stop it? Lights work?
In that case it could be ok as long as you know what you are getting into.

Others who have actually done restoration on a Series please comment, but my opinion is that you may not end up with a restoration project if the frame & bulkhead are rusted beyond repair. What you may really have is a "go-by model" or "parts donor vehicle" for the new Series you will have to build. If the frame and/or bulkhead is mainly oxide and therefore not really repairable (grind away all the rust and you're left with....nothing!), then you'll have to start with a new frame and/or bulkhead and then see what parts from your donor are suitable to add to your new vehicle. You don't want to put tired old parts on a shiny new frame, do you? Next thing you know, you've built an entirely new Series for umpteen thousands and your original purchase is still sitting there (in pieces). Just my opinion, use it as food for thought...

You guys have been awesome. ...I'm going to go and talk to Tim Cooper on my lunch break, see if he knows of any rovers around here.
I might offer the guy $500 (plus my shipping so $1300 total)- I don't know, depends if I can get replacement parts CHEAP...
By Leslie N. Bright (Leslie) on Wednesday, November 21, 2001 - 08:43 pm: Edit |
Sorry I had cut out earlier, our office was only open for a half-day today...
Blue's on the right track, but it may not be THAT bad off... axle housings, Series engines, wings, bonnet, breakfast, seatboxes, rear tub, wheels, roof they'll cleap up well, usually... Need to check for corrosion in the aluminum (my Series's rear tub was pretty bad, but it is a SIII, which are worse for rear-tub corrosion). Yeah, you'll end up replacing a lot along the way, for sure.
How far is it from you? It was less than your $800 to get one from Colorado to Tennessee.... it may very well be worth it to find a buddy with a pick-up and then rent a U-haul trailer, if it's not too far....

I'd be shipping from NY to Portland, OR.....coast to coast..
By Leslie N. Bright (Leslie) on Wednesday, December 05, 2001 - 01:59 pm: Edit |
NY to OR, that won't be cheap... $800 probably would be a good price then.
Still, tho'.... if instead of spending more on shipping on a shell of a Rover, I'd advocate finding a $1300 Series Rover nearby that is in better shape....
BUT.... a $1300 Rover will still be a complete rebuild, tho'...
Hmmmm.............
