I really like David's Freelander.

It rides smoother than the Disco on the road.

It handles better than the Disco, makes the Disco feel like it "lumbers" around.

It's peppier than a Disco.

IMO, it kinda looks like a CRV, but when you get inside it, it's definitely a Land Rover. Has the same feel... the binnacle pod, like switches... Doesn't feel at all like a Jeep or a Honda or a Ford...

I really like the steptronic transmission. And, it'd get a lot better mileage than my Disco, since it has the 5-speed and the V6.

It has plenty of leg room for me, even when I sat in the back seat. Doesn't have as much room above my head as there is in the Disco, but it is sufficent for me (I'm not little, I'm 6' tall, ~230+lbs).

All Freelanders have manual seats, no power seats. They do have seat heaters as an option though. David's has an awesome hk sound system, too.... better than my Disco's.

Ground clearance really isn't that bad. The big factor is the tire size... the 215/65R16 tires are only so tall...

No CDL, no low range, independent suspension... smaller load capability... it's harder to work on yourself... no tranny dipstick, no easy access to the air-filter or the spark-plugs, not as much elbow room in the engine bay, and the big plastic cover over the engine really keeps you from jumping in and tinkering on it yourself. The Disco is much easier to work on yourself.

The Freelander is more suited to most people... it's initial new price is less than a new Disco, it's better on the road, it's a good vehicle. The Disco is easier to work on, has more off-road potential, and makes for a much better expedition platform.

I really like both vehicles, each has a different niche to fill. I think it should do well.

I really think that I am going to try to get one for my wife.... it'll have to be after I pay off my Disco, I can't afford payments on 2 Land Rovers at once!!! It 'would' make a better commuter for me than the Disco, but... I still love my Disco too much.... :)

IMHO, YMMV.....

Hey Ho, the cool looking skid plate kinda thingis is plastic, so I wouldn't expect much action coming from it.
Leslie preety much nailed it on description (overall) A couple of particulars, After 160 miles of use, I miss a decent arm rest. Went out to dinner last night and the fuel guage was reading flat empty and the light was on....knowing that the tank was at 3/4 full, I pulled into a station, shut it off, turned it back on, and the guage was again working...Lord Lucas is in the house....

I would brace myself for road/bridge transitions only to be dissapointed that there wasn't even a thump, Cruise control held 70 mph with out any variation, hills had no effect.

Visibility is great except the A piller is a bit thick, It rained like a she-dog yesterday on the way back and the rear window does get a little washed out and the spray is a little tough to see through (but who care what's behind you anyway).

Today we will do a fork left test and post those pictures late this afternoon.

The dealer expressed displeasure with the parts support they are recieving, All my accessories from the UK will be here this weekend so I hope to get her all duded up shortley thereafter...

More to come..

David
