I am looking at a 1990 Defender 110. What should I look for, and how legal is this thing in the US? Any concerns if it is already titled? Any other info would be welcome. Thanks guys.

Couple of questions for ya....

Is it 'really' a 1990 D110? Or is it a "home-built" that has been titled as a 1990? What info can the current owners provide?

IMHO, YMMV (ie, I don't KNOW, but...) I THINK that you would be safe if it is already titled. Biggest thing, I suppose, is make sure that it is a real, legal title (there have been unscrupulous people before who make up fake titles, so keep an eye open).

Is it kitted out like a US 110, or is it more basic? (exterior rollcage? side-steps? rear bumper?) Check the chassis, and the door-frames for rust. And the bulkhead (footwells, side pillars) too.

Good work trucks. Capable. Not cushy, though. Eye-cathing, for sure.

If you's really wanna be sneaky, put a series III 109 chassis number on that thing, and put all those numbers on it and say you didn't know. As far as anyone knows, legally and on paperwork, its a 70's something S3..just don't get cuaght,a nd never give the mechanic a manual unless you really, really, trust him...

That's how I'm doing it with the 110 pickup my son and I are building. I had a cab from a 109 pickup, but it was rusted to crap. I've already bought, shipped from England, and assembled a 110 frame, box, and cab (cab and box were new take-offs, of course not from the same truck and not the same color LOL; frame was new aftermarket). Now we're deciding on a powertrain, running gear, and color (he wants a Td5/R380/LT230, Salisbury axles, and 2" lift OME suspension; I can't complain We may go with a 300tdi, though, since I can get one easily and it will be easier to work on). But as far as the DMV will ever know, it's a '61 109 Pickup 2.25 petrol.

You do not want the TD5 as it needs a proprietary test book type thing to fix.

Good luck finding a front salisbury axle. and if you find a second one let me know. There is a guy in NE PA who has a rear salisbury for $400 if you are interested.

RN has stopped doing 300Tdis due to EPA/DOT orders so don't let anyone know what you have on that.

Yeah, I've looked into that Td5 a while, and it's too much electrical for me. My son wanted it just because it had somewhat more power than the 300 tdi (plus it was in the truck I salvaged the cab off of), but I know how to work on a tdi, and I don't want to fuss with learning to install the Td5.

So Ron, what do you mean by RN not doing tdis anymore? Do you mean they don't do installs anymore? That's okay, I was planning to put the engine in myself (armed with a Defender shop manual, a little advice from my cousin in Newcastle, and a lot of determination ) Mechanically I've got everything I need to do it, pretty much (and if all is successful, my Disco may be the next candidate )

I'll let you know what I find out about some Salisburys.

RN does not sell nor install 300Tdis

They are also no longer on the RDS site. The only place still selling them in the US is ECR. Wiseowl also has a kit for them and seem to have the best price by far.
