got the tires on today - they really fill the wheel well. no rubbing so far- will try some stuffage later.

99 sd7 d1
arb bull bar non-winch
bridgestone dueler m/t's 32.2" oad

this is my first set of mt's. they are very quiet even at fwy speeds. there is some vibration at low speed from take off and again at around an indicated 62mph. power seems fine, though the car does feel more 'hefty.'

the vehicle looks very aggresive and i am so far very very pleased. an ome md+/hd set up will be on it two weeks as the tires do deserve more room!

the 1.25" CT cut is perfect for this, and made it possible to begin with (thanks john)

should have pics tomorrow

Alright Steve!

Happy 4 U ! Glad to hear everything is working out so well. I was definately "livin' vicariously through you" on the "Best Way To Trim 1/4 Panel" thread - Greg's dremmel just sitting out in the garage, front bumper beckoning to me ... I would be a danger to myself and others though (have to keep repeating to myself, "be patient, be patient ..."). OME set up will definately "frost the cake"!

Hey Steve did you check for rubbing? Red Rock isn't too twisty but with stock suspension and 32" tires...

Steve,
Pics look great - it is really gonna look good when you get your OME lift on. The shackles on the ARB look awesome, I really want to know how they hold up. I know you put a steel plate behind the mount - does it feel like that is enough?
Great Job.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Steve (Steve2) on Friday, November 16, 2001 - 07:37 pm: Edit

thanks guys-

scott- yup - after truckhaven the stocker looked too normal - so the mods began. i actually had the tires at home, but no lift. got a little bit more to go, but with any luck i'll really be ready for truckhaven II ('jay strikes back").

i figure some sliders, dog guard and an arb roof rack should do me just fine (and my now ally mcbeal thin wallet!)

marc - no extra metal behind the clevis mounts, just big washers. the mounts also stradle the inboard horn support from the frame rail. i might add some plates later though.

oh - and just for the record - coming out of the local calif chicken cafe - i did rub slightly as it is angle exit ramp with a tight turn, so red rocks is definately out for me.

steve, perhaps with an even thinner wallet, you'll be lighter, and rub less? LOL

no, i bet it was all the chicken you ate.

Steve,

Damn, you went to CCC without me? I love that chicken cobb salad they have with that thousand island dressing. That's got to my all-time favorite salad. It's been over two years since I've been to CCC. Damn.

damn chicken eaters. i guess you can eat a possom and not know the difference? :)

Ho,

You will change your ways once you taste this Chicken Cobb Salad. CCC should call it the Armgeddon Salad. It's that good.

chicken tastes like chicken - which also takes like snake and alligator. iguana does not taste like chicken - more like cat. cat is very tough and gamey, though a fat house cat does have a sweetness to the meat. raw horse is like a chewy tuna sushi. dog has a smokey flavor and can be tough(perhaps the way it is done). squirrel tastes like shit and has very little meat and only a back-ass hick could enjoy eating a mountain rat. possum is game like duck and chewey like cat. human flesh supposedly takes like pork as the canibal tribesmen of new guinea called man "long pig" - though in a pinch you can substitute bovine blood to a human in an emergency as long as the type is matching. dolphins supposedly evolved from cows who began to swin suddenly in the ocean 60 million years ago. so a dolphin is a swimming cow and humans are cow compatable in blood and organ stimulant manufacturing.

makes you wonder don't it!

all this is second hand knowledge and hear say.

we love them both.

first check on mpg - mostly around town. 11% compensation for changed tire diameter = 13.64mpg

power loss is noticible up hills - but nothing 3rd and some momentum can't fix. 3rd gear and modest throttle - it actually seems faster than before. car actually coasts better on flat due to extra momentum and inertia of addtional rolling mass. the car also seems to coast down hills much easier faster needing down shifting to maintain low speeds.

will have car lifted on tuesday and will recheck the mpg then. i'm now used to the trameling in the steering wheel from the lugs and overall am very pleased with the tires and the size. defintately need the lift or ditch the arb to gain back the 1- 1.5" lost due to the extra nose weight.

steve

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Steve (Steve2) on Tuesday, November 20, 2001 - 08:11 pm: Edit

more info-

got the car lifted today

cb springs upfront
ome n115 shocks

rear ome 762
ome n46 shock
10mm spacer on p/s to compensate for p/s spring

starting measurements

lf= 17 5/8 rf = 17 1/4
lr= 18 1/4 rr= 18

finish measurements

lf= 19 7/8 rf= 19 7/8
lr= 20 3/4 rr= 20 5/8

so before full settling i have gotten over 2" in every corner. also the car rides BETTER and SMOOTHER than before - the sway is gone. no driveline vibes or squeaks (so far!!)

i am VERY VERY VERY impressed with the set up. now the car looks totally proportional with the lift, 235-85s, bull bar, snorkel.

I FREAKIN' LOVE IT! - if you are fence sitting on doing a ome lift DO IT - you won't be sorry.

pics to come

The CB empire spreads.

woo ha ha ha haaaaaaaaa

Ron

Note: the difference in the rear was negated when those springs were moved to the front. interesting.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Steve (Steve2) on Wednesday, November 21, 2001 - 12:38 pm: Edit

ron-

i did slip in a 10mm packer in the r/r to help out the 10mm diff in the p/s spring. thanks again for the tip for the cb's.

i am still amazed how well the truck rides with a 2.5" lift. any idea how long it takes to settle and how much i'd loose?

i can see where the 762 can be a bit stiff without a load - almost went with 781s in the tail - so i compromised and went 762 with n46 vs/ n44s.

now i'm seriously thinking about some dark grey metallic tiger stripes.... you know it's a jungle out there!

in regards to installation- used a lift and air tools - acutally found the fronts to be easier and took the same time as the rears. perhaps it was all those years with audi?

steve

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Ron on Wednesday, November 21, 2001 - 12:42 pm: Edit

I meant you had a lean in the back with yoru stock rears and it went away in front when you moved them forward.

You should not lose much if anything in the front as those are already broken in. I would guess you would lose 1/4 shortly in the back but after that the sag is very slow. They will get better as far as stiff in the back but it will take about 6months.

Enjoy!

Ron

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Ron on Wednesday, November 21, 2001 - 12:44 pm: Edit

Your really don't have a 2.5in lift. Your old set up just sagged so you really only are a 1.5-2in lift, but of course call it whatever you want :)

Ron

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Steve (Steve2) on Wednesday, November 21, 2001 - 01:19 pm: Edit

ron-

so from a standard/new view it would be less of a lift then? i was using starting/finishing measurements. i'm really surprised that a 99 d1 with 40k miles would be so sagged - normal?

Brian

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Ron on Wednesday, November 21, 2001 - 01:45 pm: Edit

Steve,

Springs "settle" a bit, not much but a bit when first used after that it is a slow sag.

new DI on the lot should be in the 18-18.5 front and 19-19.5 rear or so.

Now your bull bar probably eat away some of that but springs sag in 40k miles

Ron

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By John Lee on Wednesday, November 21, 2001 - 02:30 pm: Edit

Sorry Ron, but you're smoking crack. The rear D1 springs are nowhere near 19" tall, even when new. I just measured a set of rears with 40k miles on them, and they are 15" tall.

Steve,

I'm guessing you live in Hermosa. I think I either saw a clone of your truck or I'm hallucinating. I have a newly purchased used 98 D1. This being my first Disco I'm a little new to the game but I was "smart" enough to install the OME suspension and have an ARB bumper installed (winch capable). the next step is to get larger tires....looks like the 235/85's are the way to go. If it was you, the snorkel looks great! I'm on 7th place myself by the way. My girlfriend got a real kick out of the Rover "wave". She thinks I've completely lost it with all the Rover shit I"m getting. The last addition will be rock sliders and diff guards. Who knows though the Hannibal roof rack is looking tasty as well. Thank god I didn't spend a fortune on the car itself or my budget would have been screwed vis a vis Ally Mcbeal.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Steve (Steve2) on Friday, November 23, 2001 - 12:21 pm: Edit

oaxacaj

too funny!- that was me yesterday on aviation and artesia. i saw your rig and knew i just had to give the 'wave' - i could tell you were almost there with yours. i can't recommend the 235-85's enough and i'm really pleased with the bridgestones in terms of noise, fuel economy etc.

snorkel does wonders on the trail for dust and heat. also gives a nice boost in power on the fwy - especially at speed up hills.

i used to live down there, but now am up in santa monica, was visiting my sisters who live on prospect ave and aviation.

sliders, diff guard, steering damper relocate (maybe), and mesh dog guard are next on the list. re: the rack - i am leaning towards the 79" mesh floor arb unit.

actually grey metallic tiger stripes are on the list too. poor ally - she knows not how her name is being used!!! keep in touch - trust i'll see you at ISC II?

Forgive me steve,
what in the heck is ISC II? Whatever it is if I'm not working I'm in. Too bad your not as local we could share a beer and a cigar and talk rover shit. In fact I was admiring my disco as I was having a cigar and a beer at the Steak Out this afternoon, plotting my next disco upgrade!

jorge

PS great input on the snorkel and tires

jorge-

maybe that's for the best- between the beers, looking at our rigs, credit cards, and cell phones, i think we would get into trouble REAL FAST! - though getting some quasi locals together for a pint, cigars and some darts everyonce in a while could be a good thing -
let me know

steve ( and anyone else who can give me input!!)

please provide more info on your lift--cb springs are stock rear i take it?? i just bought a 96 disco & have ordered an arb winch bumper to mount my ramsey pro 9000. found out that stock tires & lift won't allow me to do things i'm used to doing off road!! i want to keep the ride & handling intact or improved & do not want to cause any driveline vibes from excessive angles of shafts due to lift--also want to avoid bumpsteer etc. do i need new shocks with this lift??
also need info on rocker protection as i've already trashed one plastic oe one. thanks in advance for any info!! btw, i do all my own mechanical work, welding & fabricating if at all possible. hope the rover proves to be what i think it can be !!

will i lose my chance for a chunk of a sausage?

BTW, looks like it's going to be a great winter, with some decent snow in SBD mountains. how about ICS in snow? 2ft of snow does wonders to normally tame 2N71!

Congratulations Steve, I am jealous… neither vibration nor squeaky noise? Two weeks ago I replaced my front spring (for the second time) with RT’s 2 ½ & shocks and two days ago I developed this horrible vibration… if fact it so bad, it is going in tomorrow to be checked… what’s the secret?
