was taking the garbage out through the garage when I noticed a faint warbling sound eminating from my parked (no keys in it) late model 4 litre D2.... I'd never been next to the truck in a very quiet room before. I popped the bonnet and noticed the sound eminated from the ABS pump over the left front wheel. Is this normal or has something gone amiss?

Seems to me that if your vehicle is parked, with the keys taken out, it should be OFF. one question. did you have the alarm set? Although you would not have been able to open the hood if it was set. I'll have to check mine (98 SE), but I'm pretty sure it makes no sound while parked.

Wish I could help you, but my truck is older. Someone here must have the same one and can maybe help out. I'm wondering if it has something to do with your traction control. does it drive ok? are there any warning lights when you startup?

haven't noticed it on my '99 D2. Doesn't sound normal though. Clarance

I just bought a 99 Disco II....it also makes a faint sound. Sort of sounds like a clock ticking away.

I have a smilar sound on my 01 D2. I am going in for service for a few other issues and will ask them about it. from what i gather from this thread, some trucks make the sound, others don't. so far seems to be D2's. Mine is faint hum with a tick. seems to be coming from the driver side wheel arch.

I've had this problem on my '90 RR. It sounds like a high pitched mechanical whining/warbling and it is, in fact, the ABS pump cycling. It has even killed my battery on several occasions. Why it should do this with the ignition OFF is beyond my limited knowledge. However, I can re-seat the relays under the driver's side seat and it stops. It did it to my mechanic when I had it in the shop recently and he told me the ABS was getting ready to give up the ghost. However, it's been doing it for over 2 years and the ABS brakes still work, go figure.

On a 90 RR it might be an issue. As I understand it the accumulator breaks and causes the pump to run overtime (if it killed your bat it cannot be normal) which then fries the pump.

You might want to look into it further I just thought I would give you a heads up as it might be an issue.

Ron

Ron,
Thanks for the heads up, it's basically what my mechanic told me. However, that was about 2 years ago.. maybe I'm due for some catastrophic failure. Anyone ever done an ABS to power brake conversion on a RR?

On an Isuzu Trooper, the abs motor was running even when the key was out. Screamed like a bastard. Had to pull the battery cable to stop it. Nothing like the D2 quiet whirring clock sound at all. Dean
