Just came back from a 2.5 hr. road trip. Noticed a bad burning smell, but only when the A/C is on. A/C still works fine, engine doesn't run hot. Everything is normal except for the smell. Any ideas? 96 Sd., 80,500 miles.

Thanks.

Don't know, but.....

If the A/C IS working "fine", then maybe it's the electric fans up front....

The Disco uses the big fan for engine cooling; the electric fans click on with the A/C to cool off the condenser more quickly....

Matt,
check the two water condensation drains from the floor, both sides of the gearbox (bottom view).
Keep your eyes out from this gum pieces if you touch them.
Hope this help you
Scuse me for my spelling.

Not that this is your problem, but it's an idea. I worked on a Chevy S-10 Blazer a few years ago that had the internal diode rectifier in the alternator go out. Everything seemed to work fine and it did charge but whenever the A/C was turned on a single wire under the dash would get so hot that it was melting the insulation on it in a 2 foot section. Obviously, we had burning smell and we also had smoke. Just needed a new alternator.

Just a thought.

I can't seem to lock this down. I'm afraid to run the A/c now. I'm just going to bring to somebody to look at it, I guess.

Have you looked at the ac drive belt? Not long ago, during a trip to Patagonia (middle of nowhere), the ball bearing of one of the AC pulleys locked, and the belt started to burn. I just pulled off the belt and had the bearing replaced when we reached civilization. I didn't even replace the belt itself yet, for it wasn't so badly damaged, and still does fine (about 2k miles since).

I have the same problem... The smoke comes out from under the dash when I turn on the AC/heater fan. Regardless of which I'm turning on.

Any updates?
