Depends on your level of automotive ...ambition. But I agreee with Ron, to do it yourself if you can. Basically, the 90,000-mile service is a tune-up and an oil change, with a thorough "look-over" by your dealer. Older "Passports to Service" list lots of oils that need to be changed. After about '96, the swivel pins were recalled and filled with grease (STC3435 or something; you get a sticker on your front bulkhead), and were consequently deemed "maintenance free," and I leave mine alone. I've had no problems, but others on the board may argue that practice, and if there's any leakage, then you should have it checked-out. Also, Land Rover issued a bulletin saying that you really don't need to change your transmission filter if you don't want to after 30,000 miles, but you can change the fluid if you'd like. Personally, I feel if you change one, you should change both, but changing the filter is an extremely involved process that's best left to the dealer. Besides, if your transmission fluid needs changing, you'd smell it. Another thing on the list is changing your axle oil. My theory is, if it's not leaking, then you're okay (and if it has leaked some, add oil until full and be done with it). Unless you do some serious off-roading, your differential oil is more than fine. And even if you do serious off-roading, it's probably still more than fine. Some people like to change it for the heck of it. Transfer case oil is easy to change. Just drain and refill. Other than that, they check your brakes, alignment, light bulbs, put in a new air filter, and top-up all your fluids; things you'd know were wrong or would regularly keep a check on anyway. If you'd like, you can change the fuel filter (which I would recommend doing at least once every 2 years). But yes, all that is at least $495.00 at a dealer. I believe that rate varies somewhat among dealerships, though...

LRNA is the one who said that....

The honest truth is, it's a PITA to pull the crossmember to drop the pan to change the filter.

IF you go direct to ZF, though, their engineers are aware of Rover's claims and have said that it's hogwash... they recommend continuing to change the filter regularly...

The reason I ask is that I didn't change the filter just the fluid, due to the PITA factor. The problem I forsee is trying to make an extended warranty claim (hope it never comes to that) and they deny it based on the fact that the changing of the filter is part of the standard maintenance programme, and they would argue that it was not maintained and therefore would not be covered under the extended warranty.

I should learn to be more patient. I Just quickley went to alldata to see if the service bulliten was there, & found out that you can registre as an individual for a year for $14.00. So I did just that. But thanks for the offer. You guys on the board are awesome. Thnaks for the offer to help.

On your trans service, you probably put in 7 qts on a DIY drain/refill. The system holds 10 qts..
The cooler(s) and torque converter hold the other 30 %. Doing the math: you change 70% each time,
so to get to a clean,fresh volume, do it and repeat, repeat, say every 6 mos.
90k: do the transfer case too. Adjust the pwr steering box. Flush the p/s fluid. ***Replace the short heater hose***from the intake, to the heater steel tubes, over the rt valve cover.Mine @ 90k looked fine if a little swollen, felt spongy and as it's only 3-1/2"long, doesn't look too important. Removing it ,slicing it, revealed a dozen or more slits thru the inner casing, and failure was imminent! LOL. doug 95lwb
