Plan on new shocks for my 1997 D1 at first of the year. I have RTE HD 2" suspension, 235 85 r16's and carry tons of gear when I wheel. I have OME Nitrochargers in standard Discovery 1 length now. What's the best set up?

Ron-

there's probably alot of opinions out there but my Disco1 has a similar set up to yours - RTE 2" springs and Yokohama Geolandar 245/75r16 tires.

I'm running Bilstein HD shocks that I am very pleased with. They provide good dampening at highway speeds and perform well off-road. They're slightly longer in travel than stock but not much. So if you're looking for longer travel you should look elsewhere.

But the more knowledgeable will chime in if I am incorrect!

You are probably going to bounce around a bit with a lot of weight on that setup.

One option would be the Rancho RS9000s (which are adjustable with 1 being very soft and 5 being very hard). I set mine up really hard (4 in front and 5 in back) for the long trips and soft (3 in front and 3 in back) when off-roading. It's a nice compromise. It takes about a minute to adjust all 4.

Bilsteins will be stiffer than the OMEs.

OMEs are fantastic shocks. Are they worn out or are you trying to solve a particular problem?

Thanks,
Mike B.

My OME's look like crap (some surface rust from 20,000 to 40,000 miles in the NJ Pine Barrens and surrounding area by the previous owner) but I did not notice an "dead" spots in them.
