I came across these mats on the internat (http://www.calumetindustries.com/). They are called Pierced Steel Planking and measure 16"x10' 62lbs. cost $21.95 each
They are rusted and I email the guy, he told me that he can cut them in half (31lb each) sand blast them, and paint a coat of primer on for an extra $35 bucks (I asked for two of these, so it will be 4 after the cutting.)
This guy also told me some guys from Land Rover Denver South bought them for offroading too.
Anyone here used them before?
The guy estimates the 5' mat will hold about 500-600lb if supported on each end (center load). Is it strong enough to use as sand/mud ladder?
Also, anyone in the SF Bay Area want them as well? The shipping is kind of expensive, so I though I can find someone to share it. As they are rather heavy, if ordering in a larger quant. I will need fork lift to unload them (I don't have any), otherwise, there will be unloading charge too.
Feed back please.

Charlie,
Where do you think that sand ladders came from?
It's the SAME thing.....
Best use of 'em is to improve traction in slick surfaces, not as a true "bridge"

I live in the midwest, I am looking into getting some guys together and going down to pick up some of these.
If we do so, we can possibly cut some costs. If we get some guys interested I would try and get him to lower his price, or cut them for free and then we.
Email me if you are interested in one.

Got a new quote from him.
Each mat, ship UPS is $28.64 +$3 for some sort of extra charge from UPS.
Cut and blast and primed is 17.50 per mat.
again, each mat cost 21.95 +$8 if you order less than 30 of them since they have to rebundle them.
I am going for it.

OH Ron, I am doing to by myself thou. I live in California.
By Kyle on Tuesday, November 27, 2001 - 04:59 pm: Edit |
I have some of these and keep in mind they are very heavy!!! The aluminum ones are much better..
Kyle
By chrisvonc on Tuesday, November 27, 2001 - 05:11 pm: Edit |
Crap, thats right. I forgot about how heavy those boys are. Damn near threw my back out.
hmmmmm
By charlie on Tuesday, November 27, 2001 - 05:13 pm: Edit |
Kyle,
how much those aluminum ones weight?
Besides the weight, are those mat strong enough?
These are heavy, but I think it is rather cheap so it is good for abuse. It will get rust again after few use I guess.
By Kyle on Tuesday, November 27, 2001 - 05:22 pm: Edit |
Hmm , the steel ones are stiffer for sure but storage of those big heavy ass steel ones is a chore.. The aluminum stuff is probably 1/2 as heavy
Kyle
By Ron on Tuesday, November 27, 2001 - 05:24 pm: Edit |
Wuss
Get the steel. Alum will cost you big bucks. These are $60 delivered even if you only buy one pair.
Ron
By Kyle on Tuesday, November 27, 2001 - 05:28 pm: Edit |
LOL , I have the steel. The steel and the aluminum will both bend as a bridge without support so whats the advantage of carryng that heavy shit ? You wont take em cause they are so damn heavy. They aint no good sitting at home. I can assure you of that.
kyle
By Ron on Tuesday, November 27, 2001 - 05:30 pm: Edit |
They will look great on the side of the adventure rack and possibley as roof rack flooring as well.

I freely admit I am buying them for poseur value.
It is a bonus if they ever help get me unstuck
Ron
By Kyle on Tuesday, November 27, 2001 - 05:47 pm: Edit |
LOL , so nothing up on the rack but the pouser mats ?
Kyle
By Ron on Tuesday, November 27, 2001 - 05:51 pm: Edit |
And the hilift (move it to the back of the rack). . . and the lights . . .
I want to make mounts to mount them on the side a la camel trophy. i think 2 will be enough (no need for flooring)
If I actually get them muddy it will reduce the posuerness of it somewhat.

31 lbs is heavy? Wanna come over for some quality time on my weight bench Kyle? It's out in the garage with my Rover & tools, so you'll feel right at home. I'll even get some lite beer in the fridge for ya...
By RVR OVR (Tom) on Tuesday, November 27, 2001 - 06:02 pm: Edit |
Ugh! Ron, you would place a bunch of heavy shit on your roof to look cool?? The boss won't think too highly of you when the greasy side is facing up.

I'm trying to decide between Aluminum vs. Steel mats.... What tires would work best for either????
By Kyle on Tuesday, November 27, 2001 - 07:24 pm: Edit |
Blue , its not 31 , its 31 X 2 so , 62 pounds....Still not much. Add that with 4 cans of gas and a few hundred pounds of gear on the rack , a pull pal , a high lift and 4 Hella 4Ks and you damn right its allot of weight. I suppose if its just a pouser rack though its all good...

i too would like a set for posuer value, but i've checked out kyles steel ones and they are too heavey even if i never take them off. so i'll have to pass. i really would like to find a set of those plastic bridges for like $50, then i'm in.

Since we are all just getting sand ladders to bolt to the sides of our roof racks to up the posuer cool factor of our disco's, I'm going to make some out of papiermache, paint'em up nice and there you go. It will save big $$$ and not weigh a ton. People will be totally impressed and think I'm a cool camel trophy dude. Dang, with sand ladders on my roof, I get to totally score on babes now. People will never know that I'm really a posuer, it's really my mom's disco, I should get a real job and move out of my parents basement, since after all I am 39 years old.....
By Rob Davison (Pokerob) on Tuesday, November 27, 2001 - 11:14 pm: Edit |
actully, that might work for the chicks, but the truest posuer wants to impress the big boys, thats why i want the bridges.
;)

Rob,
sounds like you need to buy an Xterra.
By michel on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 - 04:57 am: Edit |
Here's two good places where ladders are good, the first one is a deep mud gully, were we had to winch 5 trucks through, and sand ladders would of made progress faster, and the second one were they were actually used to make a stable platform for a log bridge we had to build.

Keith , its a digger for sure. Tried it in Frozen ground out in Limon CO last year and couldnt get it to bite , I guess I could have given it a bit more of a starter hole but it was cold and I didnt feel like dicking with it (Winching a tractor trailer and needed and anchor to hold me still).
In everything else it works exactly as advertised. Its makes it easier if you have a second person to center it when you first start winching it in but you can get it done by yourself by making a little hole for it to stand in.
YES!! If you do a hard pull it will dig its way to china and you will have to retrieve it with a shovel and some cursing. All worth it though , if you need it you need it...I have the big one , I havnt seen the little ones in use...

Kyle: What in the hell were you doing out in Limon?
By Kyle on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 - 12:37 pm: Edit |
We got caught in that big storm last April on the way home. It was quite a dissaster for someone that lives in the East. But a hell of an adventure as well....

By Andrew Vick (Afv) on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 - 01:13 pm: Edit |
It was a disaster for us locals too. Don't get that thick and heavy of stuff too often, especially that late. I high centered my disco in the driveway while attempting to "plow" out a path for our other cars. Amazing how fast hot exhaust pipes will melt it down and let you be on your way.
By Kyle on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 - 04:13 pm: Edit |
Yeah , I was coming through the pass in the rockies the night before andmade it to Limon at about 4 am. The following morning I couldnt see the Disco parked 10 feet from the Hotel door.. Truley some freaky shit going on there.. The wind was like 75 MPH constant....

If you are local to the R.O.V.E.R.S. area (Jersey, SE PA, Del. MD.) let me know as we have a list (right Bill ).
Otherwise order direct. It is about $60 a pair if you order direct.

Shipping to Northern Cali is about 30 each (10' span.) I do not think there will be much saving over group order.
