Are the fronts the short springs or the tall springs? I have a set of front - RR4's and a set of rear - RR1's but I don't know which is which (no labeling). Anybody know free lengths of these springs?
Thanks
Red

Fronts are long , rears are short....

The fronts are the shorter ones.. The rears should have two bands of red tape on them I think.. Does that help?

LOl,,,,,, I guess its gonna depend on the rate.. My fronts are taller...

Kyle, on his new springs the front ones are shorter then the rears now. But, I think in Reds case they are going to both be the same lenght or very close to it. Call John as you can go by the color of tape on them. I'm pretty sure the red taped ones go up front and the green or blue ones go in the rear... Double check that with John though..

Could be Kyle. I have only had the 2 inch HD ones that Red has right now and the 3 inch ones that I have on right now. The 2 inchers were almost the same length and the 3 inchers are longer in the rear in my case. 3 inch 225s front 3 inch 285-325 rear.

Eric,
I'll check for red bands. I tried to call John at RTE but got the answering machine a couple of times.
Anybody else? We're talking RR1 HD rears and RR4 HD fronts...which is taller? One set of the springs I have (either RR4 or RR1) is taller and the wire is fatter than the other. The taller and fatter wired coil spring is the one I assume to be the rear.

Yeah , my fronts are 189s so tehy need to be much longer. What the hell made you get that stiff ass front spring?

I described my needs and John said HD 2" will work get the RR4 for front and the RR1 for back.
They showed up in two separate boxes and I have no idea which is which.

Yes , I had 110 HD rears in the front of mine for a spell. Nice working springs but leave mush to be desired if you want the front end working...

Red,
The rear are progressive that will tell for sure but the thicker coil should be rear. You can usually tell. Rears look like the are beefier and or taller than fronts.

soon to be winch and bumper plus, my fat ass in the driver seat.. Helps keep the sway down too I have noticed. Not flexing so much has made the ride more stable at speed with no sway bars on.

Red, check the boxes on the sides or top should have RR1-2 and RR4-2 that tells you what they are.. That or John can tell you which is which by the colored tape on them

Red, after I finish throwing this food down I'll go walk outside and take a look at what color tape I have on my front springs. It will be the same as yours. Will let you know in a few.

Just in case you didn't get it yet, I have the 2" heavy duty's from RT, courtesy of Eric N. The red tape is rear, blue is front.

Yep, Robbie is right. I just went out and looked at mine and you should have two bands of blue tape for the front springs and two bands of red tape for the rears. Thanks Robbie I couldn't remember which was which off the top of my head.

Hehe
To cloud things further - a couple of sets I've installed recently had white tape on the rears!
Anyway - doesn't matter - thicker diameter is rear - thinner is front

The tape color has to do with the different rate the spring is. I think the number of pieces of tape has to do with the height. Could be wrong about the height thing though.
By John on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 - 01:40 pm: Edit |
Color of tape denotes rates..
Red, green or white labling are rear springs...
Yellow or blue are front springs...
No. of tape wraps equals inch lift.
More and more people are opting for the heavier rate front springs either in OME or RTE springs these days by what I see in posts, even the Rons "cheap ass" lift the rate equates to a heavier front rate...And the medium rear rates seem to be more popular as far as the RTE springs.
By John on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 - 08:18 am: Edit |
Bill, the white taped springs are the rears designed for retaining with flex built in. Notice the tight winding on the top which is also the lesser rate.

Just spoke to John, whew... The blue banded shorter and thinner wired springs are the fronts (RR4) and the red banded taller and thicker wired springs are for the rear (RR1). Makes sense to me. I'm just glad I don't have to remove and replace...

Cheap bastard, not cheap ass
Ron
PS 220front /250 Rear I am telling you all.
PPS John, when I sent my email to you I meant to say SP2 not SP1

You are wrong there about the rates Ron , it works for shit. The fronts are too stiff... I think you could drop below the 189s and still get a good road ride as well as much improving front end stuffage

hehehe
YOU ARE WRONG!!!!
It works for the competition RR, well 220/220 did
I think I want SP 2s on all four corners next
With the lawn chair or the hinged arm

Have you seen Alyssa or I drive?
Just like the rainforest challenge (not really of course)
Very much admire the Smiths RR. Thus I copied its spring rates.

I saw the battered rim , that would make some sense I guess.. For the balls on destroying shit crowd I suppose you are right... Maybe you should mend your ways Ron ,you are admitedly breaking too much stuff....
Kyle
By John on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 - 08:43 am: Edit |
Ok Ron, cheap bastard lift, lol. For a strictly offroad rangie or d-90 the SP-2 on 4 corners would be a great flexy while retained set-up no doubt, you can be the first....lol.
Ron, Alan Stuart is one I can think of BTW.
By Ron on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 - 05:16 pm: Edit |
Ron will not mend ways he will mend broken rovers
such is the way
Ron
Thanks John. I will give Alan an email.

There is also a rear set of OME MD springs in the for sale section if anyone is reading this post and wants to do Ron's "Cheap Bastard" lift.
