Has anyone had any experiance with any internal engine cleaner or crankcase additives such as Restore? Do they work. How about the internal engine cleaning machine at places like Jiffy Lube? Here they claim that they run detergent through your engine and it cleans all the sludge out. Is it worth the $98.00?

Depends on your mileage. If you have a relatively low-mileage Disco (say, under 50,000 miles) the Jiffy Lube clean thing might benefit you. Otherwise, in higher mileage engines you'll be removing sludge build-up that your engine has been used to running with and you may open up all kinds of oil leakage. I've heard horror stories. It's something to think about. Restore, on the other hand, is basically paint thinner disguised as engine cleaner. I've heard horror stories from use of that product, also, up to and including increased oil consumption, leakage and performance losses.

Drew - sometimes all that sludge is the only thing left sealing the engine! (course if this is Drew A - you don't have that nasty sealing problem :) LOL)

Seriously, I don't think I'd bother. Some have had good things to say about the line that Napa carries -Lucas - for sealing things that leak, but I don't have any firsthand experience.

I think I am going to try resoline (sp)

The RR does not leak and needs an oil change so I am assuming it has got some build up

Ron - that was good for chuckle! :)

If it is, in fact, Drew A - he has by far the leakiest Rover I've ever seen - not sure which he goes through faster - oil or gas! LOL

I've used the Resoline product on my Honda and on my Disco. I put it in my Honda because it has 178,000 miles on it. I put it in my Disco because I had a noisy lifter. I just removed the valve cover from the Honda (it only has one) and the insides are clean enough to eat off of. The noisy lifer problem on my Disco seems to have gone away as well.

If you've been taking care of your Disco and been doing the oil changes regularily, I'd doubt that you'd have much buildup inside. I don't think much of those sludge cleaners at oil change places. If you are curious how much buildup you have, remove the valve covers and the oil pan! Don't forget to change the gaskets (or make new ones) while you are there.

Thanks,
Mike Bauer

Bill B- I wouldn't trust anything called "Lucas" to go into the engine! :-)

Yes Bill, This is Drew A with the leakiest Disco in the entire world. Like Trevor says I am doing mother earth a favor by giving the oil back to her. Just doing my part to preserve, and give back the earths natural resources. Suprisingly I do not lose as much oil as it would seem, about 1 quart every 3,000 mile. At 199,000 miles I would expect to lose more. That kind of disappoints me. :-) Will resoline quiet my noisy lifter? LOL

I just mixed up some kerosene and a little oil and voila! Let the engine run with the mixture in it for 15 minutes. Then let all those chunks of carbon fall out! Put new oil in and new filter and you should be GTG!!!!

A quart every 3000 miles isn't bad. Heck, even Honda, the supposedly almighty leader in engine innovation, states in their owners manuals that their engines burning a quart every 1000 miles is not excessive and could be considered normal. Of course, I've never seen a Honda engine burn oil, so maybe that's a dislaimer... :)

Be careful cleaning out the sludge. I have 90,000 miles, had my intake manifold gasket redone and some sludge dropped into the oil pan. Changing the oil did not get it all out and was enough to clog the screen on my oil pickup. I had to have the oil pan pulled to clean it out and I changed the oil pan gasket while I was in there.

mybuddy had a prelude that burned oil real nice..but I guess he sis stand on the rev limiter alot power shifting and NOS could also be a factor as well..needless to say he blew it up but it took him a while
