I live in the Silver Spring area and have been less than enchanted with Land Rover of Rockville. Are there any good independent shops anyone has been happy with in the area? I have a '97 Disco.

His shop specializes in Italian and British - he is a good friend and also has a much modified Disco. His shop does lots of Rover work.

How about Northern Virginia? I've been to both LR Alex and LR Rockville and I didn't like either of them. Redline Motorsports in Purcellville (Loudoun Co.) has done some good work for me. 4x4 Connection in Sterling also does work on Rovers. Anyone know of any others?
Does Kyle do consultant work? I can do most of the work, I just need someone to look at my truck and tell me whats wrong, whats going to go wrong and what works well (i.e. Warn 12K + ARB).

Bad has progressed to worse... We were looking to bring the beast in due to a faulty fuel gauge -the bottomless tank incorrectly insisted that it was no more than quarter full at all times. Now I get a call from the wife on her cell phone that the vehicle has to be towed because the steering wheel is shaking violently and applying the brakes sends it all over the road. Perhaps hydraulics?

You should heed Bill Bettridge's advice and visit TMS in Owings Mills. It's a bit of a hike from Montgomery County but the level of service and Rover expertise would make it worth your while.

I have to agree with Bill and Jay about TMS. It is a long distance but its worth it. Trevor and his crew are very knowledgeable. You will be more than happy with their high level of service. They are also the only place in the area with a complete computer diagnostic device. With this you can pinpoint what are causing all of those annoying warning lights on the dash.

Arlington Motorcars in Clarendon also works on rovers. Although I can't say they're quite as awesome as TMS, they're okay. There are almost always Rovers in their lot, even old series trucks. I've been there a couple of times for service but never for anything major.

Just kidding Brent-if you don't contact Trevor, Contact Brad over at www.cityimports.com he's another Rover, Jag, Rolls, Porsche, Bentley, Austin, Sunbeam, Mini, MB, Jensen, Caddy, BMW, Audi, etc. etc. Car Nut-call him up, its pretty fun visiting City Imports, because there is always something interesting in the service bays, or the parking lot waiting for service. I've meet some pretty decent Rover owners, as well as British car nuts.

Hey Drew, City Imports has the complete computer diagnostic device also. Not trying to flame you or anything, just thought I'd inform others. Bent you can also head over to Tischer----they are ex-Rover dealers but long for the opportunity to continue Rover Service....but don't go there ok-

Bent maybe Myself along with Drew, Kyle, EricN, Karen and anyone else in the MD/DC/NOVA area can come over bring our tools, Rover Shop manuals, and desire to learn to repair these easy to repair 4x4's and get you rolling again...

Bent, I wish I could help but I've got the DII shop manual, not the DI. I also know spit except that my sense is you're right to avoid the Rockville dealership. Good luck to you, wish I could be more helpful.

The saga continues...

It seems that my wife's second cell phone call was to have the Rover towed to the dealership I mentioned earlier.She said the vehicle was absolutely undrivable with the steering wheel 90 degrees out of phase and all over the road.

I am delighted to find the alternatives listed by the subsequent postings. I will certainly make use of those options. I have been a long time reader, though not previous poster on the Discoweb site and have always been impressed by the support and care shown by the Disco fraternity (and sorority).

I will share the impending diagnosis and perhaps call upon the offers of assistance.

By the way, when I was in the Army, a transmission in the clear of a "bent victor" meant that you had a downed vehicle that needed recovery. I was hoping that someone would enjoy that veiled reference.

if your in NOVa, get out to British Classic Cars on Rt. 50 west of Chantilly, its actually in Arcola in the middle of nowhere, but Philip KNOWS his stuff. He always has ROvers of series vintage, and discos, and range rovers. Great shop, with a restaurant for british beers and foods and other cool stuff. 703-327-2287
