Ok, So when I bought my 97 Disco, I didn't do a background check. I knew it had been in an accident, but it all checked out fine. So I bought it. Come to find out, it had also previously been stolen. So here's where the fun begins...
The key I have starts the ignition, but doesn't open the doors. When I had the dealer make me a key based on the VIN, it wouldn't do either. So now the only way I have to get in, is the remote, which could die at any time.
Has anyone ever replaced the locks, or ignition? If so - for how much? Any other suggestions?
Also the RR laser cut folding keys are awesome. Is anyone developing something like that for the Disco?
Thanks,
Patrick

Have you tried a locksmith? You don't have a chip in the key, so you might be able to get off cheaper than going to Land Rover for new locks/ignition...

Has anyone tried using a D2 key for a D1 key? Can the remote be programmed? That would be nice...

The D2 key/remote cannot be programmed to operate a D1 alarm. I know that the D1 transmits at 315mhz, but if forget the frequency for the D2. Key shank will work though.

is there a way to have a key made to fit an existing lock if you don't have the key? you know - like you see in the movies.

mcleanva,
Yes, you can on older model cars, but not sure about the newer ones. The A4 I used to have had laser cut keys (So do many other new cars)that is almost impossible to fit a key by using the lock.
My friend had a old Corsica back in college and I lost my key somewhere. Called the locksmith and they open the door for me, took the lock out from the glove box lock, and fit a new key for him. All cost about 70-80 bucks (in 1992) and done within 10 min after they get the door open.

So, what are the odds of the RR folding keys working on a 99 D1? I would assume that the remote operates on a different frequency as well.
