I bought a 96 disco about 3 months ago and was wondering if the roto came stock on all discos or if they changed to u-joints at one point. Mine has u-joints at all four joints between the front and rear. Does this mean someone has already replaced the driveshaft?

No, they switched from rotoflex to ujoints around when your car was built.

Not completely true Ax , some discos use the Robo flexer still today..

Yeah, yeah, They used whatever they had in the parts bin that day, but the majority changed around that time....

Doubtfull , but still possible.... As Ax said , I think they just put on what was handy... Craig can probably elaborate...

what are the pros and cons on the roto-flex compared to u-joints

If this is the case (that they changed to u-joints at one point in time), is there a direct replacement driveshaft that perhaps one might find in a boneyard that would not require the rotoflex?

Yes - you can use a DS from a pre-viscous coupling transfer box RR - '87-88 I believe, but there may be other years.

Paul,
you can do it, but you will have to pull the rear yoke off the pinion shaft. BTW, there is nothing wrong with the rotoflex, nathan has it for $60-something.
how's your saginaw steering coming together?
