OK, I really like the Cheap Basterd lift using the rear springs in front. How about a Cheap Basterd winch mount. I plan on buying a Warn 9K or 12K winch in the near future but would like a mount similar to the mount on Martin Podgorski’s truck in the archives. I want something that I can still use my stock bumper and LRV brush bar for the time being. I will probably have to fabricate and weld at home but if some one knows of a Cheap Basterd way doing this, it would be really cool. Just trying to do this in Cheap Basterd steps, Keeps the family budget happier that way.

By the way, Truck is 99 D1 SD all stock with 245/75/16 GY MTRs

What ya think?

Any body got any ideas?

gearhead
what he has mounted is hardly budget...The Landrover OEM winch tray is a pretty penny, and you cant use the wrap around brush bar that is on your truck now...unless you do some welding, and some cutting.
They do however make a wrap around brush bar that bolts directly to that tray you have seen in that gallery
The bottom line, is if you go cheap, You will end up getting hurt, or hurting someone else. Plus the damage your truck can endure if your mount gives way.
I think there is a reason all these mounts cost a pretty penny to buy.

just my .02 cents worth

I didn't see a Land Rover mount from Warn or Ramsey other than the front reciever hitch. I feel the reciever hitch mount is questionable at best. Looks like I will have to go for a full bumper like Safari gard blade and weld on two tubes to eccept my cut off brush bar. Does any one make a hidden mount for d1 anymore?

And by cheap, I don't mean poorly made but don't want to buy a bumper only to find out it sucks and then have to beef up the mount by welding steel to it. Hell I could just fabricate a winch tray if I need to but if one already exists, even better. however, I am leaning to the bumper upgrade since as we all know, there isn't mutch bumper there from the factory.

Thanks for the input.

BA2144 – Discovery 1994-98 - $120.00
BA176 – Discovery II 1999-2001 - $125.00

It works with the wrapper too I think, but not sure. Let s know if it is.

gearhead, there are two options for you

check the forsale section of this board for a Original LR winch mount wich still uses the factory bumper.

I believe you can see pics on roverconnections web site, or email nathan crabtree at Boatbuggy@aol.com
he can get one for you.

I have not heard anything about the front reciever mount, so I cant comment on that one..( looks funny though dont you think)

I think its the same work getting a reciever mounted up front, than a few bolts for the OEM winch tray. I have it on my truck, here is a pic below of what it looks like up close..

I do think there is a hidden mount still around, by some aftermaket company...check out Paul Kleinkramer's photogallery, and scroll to some of his first pics...enlarge them and you will see the hidden mount, keeping factory brush guard.
Hope this pic works, if you want more email off board

Great man. Thanks for the input. This is exactly what I am looking for. maybe a used mount like yours or a used hidden mount. Thanks again. I will let you know how it turns out.

By the way. looks like I could cut my brush bar off about where yours ends and weld solid bar stock to the winch mount or SG bumper and slip my old bar right on.

Gabe.

Dean. Just checked out the web site and that's what I mean by cheap Bastard winch mount. Looks like the least expensive way to go untill i can afford the SG bumper or the Bull Bar bumper. Will call DAP on Monday and ask if it will accomdate a larger winch than 8K warn. If only the 8K Ilbs warn will fit, is that heavy enough? I don't see myself winching up virtical walls like on the Moab tape but, want to atleast be able to pull out of NC mud. Has anyone used this set-up?

Got me all exited, at $120, I could do this before Xmass.

You can also get a winch mount that mounts under the front spoiler, between the frame rails. With your stock bumper. Bearmach produces this, and I believe Nathan boatbuggy@aol.com, should be able to help you acquire it for a very small sum....

Ramsey used to make a hidden winch mount thats made to fit a REP8000 or REP9000 - that's what Paul Kleinkramer has fitted to his Disco. I've got one of these trays-brand new in the box-that I'd sell for $85(+ship). I was going to go down this route last year but then decided to get an ARB instead.

If interested, e-mail me
bakluge@ra.rockwell.com

Thanks,
Brian
