A while back I recall reading a post about straightning out the rear bumper after it had been bent. The process involved puting a 2x4 into the bumper (I believe) and using that to bend it back. As I am a little fuzzy as to what exactly is being done, could anyone elaborate?

Would I be in trouble if I just stuck a piece of wood in there, got a rubber mallet, and started banging away?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

D1

passenger side, corner. hehehe

If I can ever get off my ass and do it, my plan is to hook my chain onto the underside lip of the fender and wrap the other side of the chain around a stationary object (concrete bollard) and give it a little pull. Maybe if can pull in the direction opposite to the force that bent the bumper upward, it will straighten out. Maybe I'll just pull my bumper clean off! We'll see...

This sounds smart ass - but it's actually not - a couple love taps with an 8 lb sledge work pretty well to push that smiley face back down again. I used to try, but now I don't bother and have gotten used to the permanent :) LOL

I wouldn't mind if it was my bumper that bent---I would probably do the same thing as you, Bill. However, this is on my dad's. His isn't exactly an off roader---they're called "mall crawlers" I believe:) (I am working on him although)

I told him that I would give him my bumper, but that didn't seem to fly for some reason. The only options are to get a new bumper or fix the one he has--I think I can fix it.

Blue, I'll run your method by him---I'm sure he would be ecstatic if I decided to do that:)

I am just trying to find out if anyone has done this with good results.

Thanks guys,
Chris

chris -

john lee was kind enough to help me on mine - here is the process step by step

1: tools needed- socket set
2: screwdrivers
3: heavy rubber mallet
4: 2x4 - 24-36" long is fine
5: second piece of wood to brace rear of car against ground to keep it stable.

steps
1: remove end cap assembly
2: remove bumper lamp assy - might be tight - be gentle - these are expensive to replace.
3: insert 2x4 into side of bumper as far as possible
4: brace rear of car so it's solid
5: gently push down on the 2x4 until bumper is straight - or close enough.
6: send john a thank you letter at EE
7: reassemble car in reverse order.

Thanks, Steve (and John Lee)---that sounds like it should work well.

Ron---I still would like to see those pics, but it doesn't appear that too many people are keen on acquiring a motorcycle--maybe it's because winter has set in:)
