Which year and model Disco is overall the best? I want the year with the "good" tranny and the valves that dont foul ( 1996 right?)and the less ACE or ABS the better, I think I have to get ABS. Now that you have yours if you had to buy over would you get the same one??? Help me narrow my search please.

I'd say anything pre-Series II. At least you'll be able to control your diff lock. Personally, I'd stick with anything pre-'96; that way no GEMS to fool with and you can still use Buick 215 parts on your engine (yes, the 4.0-litre introduced in '96 is of a different block design).

The threads on this board usually say to get a '97 to a '99 D1. They have less problems. Get it in SD trim. My vote goes with Ho!

Leslie, I agree. If you want a station wagon get a Series II, if you want a junker, get a pre96 mode, but if you want a true Disco... The 99 Disco I SD is the way to go.

The WORST years for reliability were 95 and early 96. After that BMW kicked some ass and cleaned things up a bit. BUT, if the truck has some decent miles on it, the reliability issues have probably all been worked out and you're free and clear - check the service record if you're buying used.
You're probably better off, overall, with the distributor-less GEMS 4.0L engine from 96 on.
The general buzz is a D1 is better for heavy off roading, although I have no first hand knowledge of any D2's engaged in serious action. For any other off road activities, they're probably both about the same.

If you want to be able to read your fault codes (as opposed to paying $$$ for a reader or going to the Stealer) get a 94 or 95, OBD-I. You can save yourself a lot of $$$ by pulling your codes and fixing the problems yourself. I have a 95 and am amazed at how reliable it has been since I got it. Only 3 minor problems over the last 30k miles. I am now at 115k miles and getting 16 mpg, runs like a champ.

where did you get the info that the 4.0 has a different (from 3.9) block? I believe it's the first time i ever hear about it.
About GEMS and OBD-2 - while the old engine management and sensors seems to be simpler, there is no tool like what obd-2.com makes. Piece of cake, the simplest (to install and use) and most elaborate (in information and layout) diagnostic tool ever.

There were some changes between the 3.9/4.2 and 4.0/4.6, but they're not THAT different... lost the dizzy, but actually a lot of things will still interchange....

Is this not true only if you do get a code to read? My stupid Gems gives me trouble and the dealer can't find anything as by the time they get it it runs fine and there are no codes to read. Would the OBD-II tool help me at the moment when it stalls? I would hope so. Where can I get one?
As to the engines, I too believe the blocks are the same and this is the first time I've heard there might be differences. I'd like more info if possible.

go to http://www.obd-2.com, $122 or so.
It will do the instant diagnostics for you, log the data, provide real-time display of what's going on with your GEMS, etc. You need a computer to run the software and to talk to the ECU, laptop comes handy 'cause you do the diagnostics while driving the disco.

Okay guys correct me if I am wrong. I believe the 4.0 is like the 4.6 in that it is cross-bolted. The 3.9/4.2 are different in that they aren't. A very slight difference between the two.

The 4.0-litre introduced in '96 was a completely redesigned engine. Overall the block is about 75 cm shorter than the 3.9, and it also featured different cylinder liners and different internal block structure. It used different pistons and a different crank, but kept the same heads as the 3.9 and used the same intake. Thery're not ground-breaking differences (both engines even have the same power output) but it's significant enough that many parts are not interchangeble between the two engines. It's also why you won't find any info on the 4.0 in your Discovery Haynes Manual. And that's also why the 4.2 in the Rangie is different than the 4.0/4.6.
Anyway, I found all this out back in 1995 from booklets and brochures published when Land Rover was developing what they called the "Romulus" engine ("Remus" was the Rangie's 4.0/4.6). They were quite proud of it, since it was "their" engine and not a carryover of the old "Jay" engine, which was, of course, derivitive of the Buick 215.

Yeah, I'd like to know where that shorter lenght comes from. Not only do the heads fit but so does the cam (or I'll find out soon enough that it does not). Man I wish I new all this before I bought the 96. I probably would have gone for a 94.

I like the early 97's the best. 4.0 over 3.9. The 97's had the clear windows, which I much prefer to the tinted windows. And they had the radio antennae inside the rear windows, which is another feature I like. AFAIK, all of the 98's had the tinted windows. I'm not sure, but I believe the 97 SE and 98 LE are identical.
I did see some 99 Disco I SD's with clear windows. Those are nice too, and they were a bargain. A local dealer was selling some demonstration models with less than 3,000 miles on the odo for $22k.

Oh, I love mine. It's just that on mine it's the Gems that's screwed up in addition to other little electrical quirks. I can live with funny blinkers, non-working sunroof, stiff non-responsive PS mirror, intermittent heat blower and funky central locking remote but I cannot and will not drive a car that decides to quite every now and then.
I'm really making it sound worse than it is. The roof and mirror are mechanical problems. The remote probably needs a new battery. The fan and blinkers could be loose connections but who knows. The engine management system on the other hand will have to go.

I'm no expert by any means, but I can tell you my experience with my 2000 DII has been great, on and off road. A few mod's including OME suspension, 265/75/16 mud terrains, and a homemade CDL have really made a great ride for the moderate off-roading I do. I plan to continue upgrading the rover for more serious off-road use, but in all honesty I've had nothing but a positive experience from day one.

I have posted this many times, the first year BMW had input on the Disco was 1997. They made some engine and other important changes. The DII is wider, longer, heavier. Not quite as good on narrow rough trails. I did a lot of research before I bought my 97 lease return and turned it into an off road toy.

Since what I stated yesterday about the 4.0-litre V8 was pulled from the deep, dark reaches of the back of my brain, I wanted to make sure I got everything right since several of you had never known the 4.0-liter was a different engine. So I went home and rummaged through my old magazines and found a June 1995 edition of "Automotive Engineering International" magazine that had an article about Land Rover's placement of the 4.0-liter in the Discovery.
Correction: the 4.0-liter was not known as the "Romulus" engine. That was, in fact, the design name of the Discovery platform from '94-'98. The engine was known as the RV8. It was developed for the Range Rover for '94, sharing its design with the Rangie's 4.6, and found its way into NAS Discoverys for '96. Somehow Land Rover considered it a cost savings, but the big advantage of that engine was the distributorless ignigtion, a new fuel injection system co-developed by Bosch and Segam Lucas, and other engine management sensors that helped the engine run smoother and get a mpg better gas mileage. Everything else mechanical about the engine I said was correct. And this engine was never placed in Discoverys in other markets (which would explain it not being in the Haynes manual; I had not recalled this NAS-unique fact). So hopefully that clears everything up. And of course, the RV8 preceeded the "Thor" V8, which was developed for the Disco 2

Yup. I can get RPI's RP4 piper cam or get one made by Crane. So I might as well put in an RV type cam as part of the conversion. I guess this spacer you're talking about would have to make up some of that length difference.
I found pretty much everything but the timing cover and gasket locally. So I do have a plan on how to convert it but I will have to wait what happens with the warranty first (1 more year) and I guess I'll start gathering parts soon. But if it leaves me stranded one more time, the dealer will have to do something or it's getting converted right away.
I priced it out at about $2000 CDN which is a lot of dough for silly conversion but I figure it's still way cheaper and simpler than dropping in a 302/355 aluminum Ford. Although this one would give me better power for sure.

Woodcote green is my favorite. I think it is only on the 98+ and it may only be on the anniversary editions. I've owned White 94, Black 96, BRG 97, Rioja 97 and White 98 again. I want the Woodcote though. I bought the 98 as a little fixer-upper 2 years ago and it still isn't repaired.

Dee, i test-drove a '62 109 SIIA in la jolla - that was a delight. in three blocks, it finally gained some speed, and i decided that i can put up with the pace without having to go through an anger management class. At this moment, i was getting close to intersection with LJ boulevard (in the middle of a day). In a few milliseconds, i started seriously worrying about the seat mounts' structural integrity. The sucker just wouldn't even slow down! I ended up five feet into the right lane of traffic when it finally came to rest.
A week later i bought the big jeep.
the sad reality is that it is a royal PITA to drive a 40-years old truck in today's traffic. A real man's work... or you have to modify the truck to where only the body will be left.

The 109 will not be street driven only a trailer vehicle. CARB will not have a say on this one over 30 years old. The total build up from Bone Yards ECOLOGY will assist. I have my eye on a 351C
It will be more ford Bronco ( Old stuff not Bronco II) than LR No over price stuff on this toy. Funny how a II after a solid vehicle run screws it up.

lol, I know, I know, ... they're 255/70/16's, and when we change the springs, it'll look a little goofy ... I was just thinking, (pretending I had the cash at this very moment, hahahaha) if I put on 4 new tires this month, that would bring our total of new tires since March (counting the new stocks on it when we bought it) up to 13 ... actually 14, if I count the POS that "Ed" blew on with ether & matches over at "Ed's Trees, Tires, and Snake Venom" in middle of nowhere, Octillo Wells (that POS junkyard tire got us home at least, lol)

The Clevland is a bad choice Discodad. The windsor is a much better choice for a 4x4...

Where did you get a 351 Cleveland? Aren't they pretty rare and all gobbled up by the Stang lovers? The Windsor was the one with big production #s, right?

Naaa , many many Cleveland motors out there. The "CJ" Cleve with the four bolt mains was pretty rare but plenty of the others around. The two and four barrel motors came in all kindsa crap...

Oh, I thought they were rare for some reason...hmm. What kinda numbers can you tweek from one of them? (You personally, since you've done alot of drag racing/hot-rodding)

The 351C was a favorite, yes ex stang lover. A 351C has more power than a Series could ever use.
Sort of like showing up for a duck hunt with a
20MM cannon.
But a Ford buildup might be fun. You are right the C's are getting hard to find. i might have to buy a POS stang for the Iron.
