I own a '01 DII with ACE component. Compare to my '97 Disco I, this gives much better handling and smoother ride. However, I find this noisy during city driving, and also starting up this truck has a rubbing noise, like a gear rubbing onto something. I hope this is normal on the ACE, and not just mine. Anyone in here with the similar situation?

Kiem,
When I first start my 99 DII ACE and start to Un-parallel park it, it makes a lot of noise. But not while driving.
I asked Dean (he doesn't have ACE) if he thought my truck was extra loud...he didn't think so.

Kiem, could that be your compressor running whn you start the truck? Just a thought...

Kiem, I too have a '00 ACE truck. That 'whine' is normal, and is mostly audible to the driver as the pump is almost directly behind the firewall from you. I know fellows who have had their pumps replaced because of the whine only, but after a few miles, that 'feature' returns. After having my ACE for about 9 months now, I'm pretty use to it, the noise that is. I wouldn't worry about it. Unless the amber or red light illuminates on your dash or you see smoke coming from the hood, your in good shape.
The smoke reference was to ACe trucks before they replaced the idler pulley with a steel one. The plastic ones yes to shear off and wreck the engine compartment. It was a serious thing to see...

DM,
What trucks had the plasic pulley?

The first DII's with ACE did. LR did a recall on them I believe in late 2000. The ACE pulley itself was plastic. One of my buddies had one at roverfest last year (2000), all of a sudden we heard a ping, the dash ewent red and smoke came out of the hood...
At the time, it made the case to always carry a non-ace belt with you in your repair kit if you had an ACe rig. That way, you could make it back to the trail head. We weren't as smart then...

Hmmm,
I have an early ACE model.. could you describe where to find the pully to see if I have the plastic one.
Any help would be great.
thanks
PS I bought the truck in 2000 so they might have made the change at the dealer.

Carl, it's hard to describe, but when looking at the belt setup, it should be the upper right pulley. You should be able to identify it coming from the ACE pump. If you need further explanation, I can take a pic or scan the parts manual.

Thanks everyone for your responses. In this case, mine is just normal.
