My brakes are grinding metal to metal, and I have yet to see or hear any type of warning what so ever. What is wrong with my warning system?

That grinding noise would be a pretty good indicator that you need pads.

The pads have sensors. If the pads are too warn you will get a warning.
But the sensor is only on one pad in the front and one in the rear (at least on older Rangies it is).
It could be that you have a stuck piston on one of the calipers. Check all the brake pads before you screw up the rotor (ask me how I know).

This webpage tells of some sort of warning system with wires ect. that should warn of worn pads before they get to this point.
I didn't get any type of warning what so ever, no sqeek, no lights, no nothing, until now, I hear and feel grinding, and I have to put up with is for a week because it the rotor that now has to be replaced is coming from England.
Should there have been some sort of warning, and if so how do I insure that it happens next go round????

I have never seen a sensor on the pads for my 98 Disco.

I would say the best thing to do is to check them every once in a while. Every couple months pull the wheels off and have a look.. Would be the best way.

ONly RR have the warning. And it rarely works.

Yep, you're right. I wore down the pad with the sensor to the bone (actually to the backplate) and never got a warning. Fortunately I heard the grinding before I messed up the rotor.
Ron, do I bleed all the calipers or just the fronts? I replaced pads, pistons and seals on the front only.
Thanks

You can just do the fronts but I would do them all as I am like that.

Ah, the infamous "low brake pad warning light"...it's all bullshit. Dealer told me all about this non-existent sensor & warning light on my 96 Disco when I asked them about brake pad longevity & recommended replacement intervals. When I tried to get them to warranty new rotors because the sensor failed and I went metal to metal, they were like, "What sensor?" Gotta love the dealer...

yeah, there is no sensor on my 1997 disco. so i cut that wire off the brakes pads, i was told the RR has the sensor and RR and disco share same brake pads.. thats why ther was a wire.
anyway, it would be nice if they had the old fashion squeeler type.

Seems like I have the old fashioned squealer type. But if I paid attention I'd be replacing pads every goddamn day.
