I like them. I did have to adjust my lights down, I'm up 3.5". The high beams rock, but in heavy fog the 80 watt low are just to much. I use my fogs and city lights when it gets pea soupy here.

Robert thanks again, Im gona go for em...

But I checked out the pairs on ebay posted above and they are 50 bucks...and that is on ebay...

I dont care if they say PIAA on the bulb, why would I want to buy a 50$ bulb when I can buy one for 6.99?

am I missing something?

The piaa have thicker glass and high pressure xenon inside. You can also get the blue-tint versions like I have, at 80/80W, and they are cool. I certainly hope they last a few years!

Here's another bulb question: what bulbs come in Hella 500s? Is it a standard size (like H4), or is it a special Hella bulb? I ask because it looks like those lights are ~60 watt, which is no brighter than a typical low beam. I'd like a brighter bulb, but the lights were given to me so I don't have the box and stuff. Anyway, if anybody knows that bulb size and where I could get a 90+ watt version (maybe 130 watt like my IPFs), I'd appreciate the info.

Jon the Hella 500s use a stanard H-3 bulb. They come in 55,100 and 130 watt.

Better make sure the housing that holds the bulb won't melt with something like 130W replacing 55W. My hellas (4000s) specifically state that the 100Ws CAN be replaced with 130W bulbs (but that's only a 30% increase).

Hella makes H-4 replacement bulbs for the factory headlights. They make 80/100, 90/130 and 100/140. These are real watts drawn and not the "looks like" a certain wattage.
These Hella bulbs cost $10-12 a piece.
I put an upgraded IPF wiring loom with relays for the upper watt bulbs. Part # M002 (I think), costs about $100.
The total cost of bulbs and wiring loom of about $120, and the "looks like" bulb cost of $100-130 for just bulbs.
If the bulbs blow with the wiring loom, new bulbs for $10-20 and your back in business.
If the "looks like" bulbs blow, it will take $50-130 to be back in business.
These Hella bulbs are very bright white.

Scott - you don't have any problems with melting the plastic bulb holder or the like? Did you run them this summer at night? I was thinking of going over 80/80W, but was not sure. Some of the higher wattage bulbs have ceramic bases, not metal / glass, so they must get pretty damn hot. Also, are you D1 or D2?

Joshua-

Yes you did miss the point

Quote from the vendor

"These use 55/60 watts of power but the output is 100/110W. I know the picture shows 110W/130W, but according to PIAA, they're 100/110W, since they make them, I am using them as my reference. These bulbs are different from the American SuperWhites due to a special Plasma Blue coating for the low beam. It emits a light that is more Blue/Purple tint and is a lot brighter than the SuperWhites. This bulbs from PIAA are the closest thing than to get the real H.I.D kits which cost upwards of $1K." His words were true

HID is a loose term in the light industry. The 6$ literally can not hold a candle to these ones. I was a skeptic at first 50$ for set of a bulbs. Look at the price for the PIAA, or other similar watt off road light set $

I have not tried it in the heavy fog ill probably reinstall my fog lights IPE combo lights.

IMO the "Super Whites" are worse than the OEMs too much glare and I have not had PO on coming drivers with the PIAA as with the

If your local ill give you the "Super Whites" 6$ set for free, It was more like 12$ each at NAPA

PS no heat probblems the bulbs draw less that the "Super Whites"

If you replace the H4s with some nice fancy blueish bulbs, you can get matching side lights from:

http://autosupermart.com/cgi-bin/auto/brands/piaabulbs.html

(piaa19170 are nice):
piaa19170

Then you don't get the HID look with the stupid yellowish parking light mixed in. They are halogen too, so should last 10 times longer than the crappy lights they give you stock.

These are $15 / pair, so if anyone knows of somewhere that sells similar bulbs for normal prices, let us know please!

I have been running this set-up for about 10 months and have had no problems with heat or melting, I live in Atlanta. I do a fair amount of nighttime driving.
I currently run the 80/100 bulbs. I did burn out the high beam in one bulb and have ordered the 100/140 bulbs. They should be in today or tomorrow so I will find out more later.
Hopefully I won't melt anything.:)

Best bet to go for spiffy HID lookin lights, etc.. is your local import car shop. I just got some awsome Piaa HID knock off for 40.00 and they are brighter than my brother IPFs and they look indentical to my friends bmw.

My $.02

What Make are those Knock Off's ?

Sylvania makes some "Cool Blue" HID knock-offs in both H4 and 9003CB sizes. They're regular looking bulbs but are filled with xenon gas instead of halogen. Effectually, you get the bluish-white light of an HID system (which use xenon gas) but not the intensity because of the limitation of using a 55/60W bulb (HID systems create an arc between ballasts within a xenon gas-filled tube, much like flourescent lights, which causes the gas to "flouresce" brighter than burning a tungsten filament alone in the gas). Anyway, I gave 'em a try on my Disco and I've been pleased. They're a considerable improvement over halogens of any wattage.

...just FYI :)

i know this discussion took place before, but i have those xenon gas blubs. they are the same wattage as stock, but certainly give a MUCH 'whiter' light. got mine on ebay for around $25/pair. have had them a year now and no issues. they are not the funky blue ones or anything like that. just the brilliant white ones. they are noticably different. i know all the technical jibber jabber about how some are BS and all that, but it is hard to deceive the eye when it comes to seeing better. i like 'em and will continue to get them in the future. not sure on the make of mine. had a 2 year warranty.
