I have searched under the passenger seat as well as under the dash on the passenger side of the truck, and I cannot find the box with the LED readout that shows the fault codes. Is there anywhere else it could be. Could it be missing? I have a 96 Disco SE7.
Also, I have tried to reset the Check engine light by putting a nail in the emmisions maintenance reminder box with no success. Is there anything special I need to know about that?

In the US, 96+ is OBDII. You have no code box, and the "Emissions service reminder box" is for the red "service engine" light, not the "check engine" light. To read the codes, you'll need an OBD2 scanner, either at a garage, or a cable/adapter for a laptop that you get. http://www.obd-2.com/ The display box is only on OBD1 Discos, 94-95 in the US.

1996 will not have one. It's the first year for OBDII and you need a scanner to read your codes. There is a few of us with laptops and the software to check codes and reset the CEL. I'm in N Ca and would be happy too if your close. Check the tech page for more info on the software.

Where do you plug the cable in that runs to the computer? Is it in the truck or under the hood?
