Everybody keeps talking about what other tires to go to. Well what is wrong with my good ole factory XPC's???

I personaly think they are the best tire I've ever owned. I have 20,000 miles on them now, and they look not far from new. There are no chunks taken out (from rocky dirt roads at high speeds) like all my other vehicles had, and in my opinion they get great traction. On top of all that, I really love the way they look.

So why does nobody buy them the second time around?

William, they are the best tires, no worries, nothing wrong with them. Decent in snow, sand, or on the slickrock. Michelin is replacing them with Alpin 4x4 (a bit better thread design, but basically the same with some siping).

hmmm..how much for those meat puppies again?? Oh yeah, and whats the limiting factor on a mostly stock disco on an uphill muddy trail...stock tires..I still have mine, but...I'm still lookin at those good old mud tyres I think...

neither is any good in mud.

on the street, there's no equal, H-speed rating + E-load rating.

From time to time I go well over 100MPH, and these tires seem to do great.

If I would like to reserve that ability, would my XPC's be the best for the all around preformance (100+ on road, and better than average off road)?

I thought Avon was a brand . . . made/owned by cooper I believe.

Avons are a brand (possibly owned by another) of tire. specializing in high speed applications-
The Michelin style I referred to is the Synchrone. A direct supercession of the XPC.

The XPC is, as you said, not bad. It's a lot of tire... it's great on the road, and not bad when off (if you're not in mud). Good speed rating (faster than I'd ever take my Disco! 80mph is fast enough....), it's tough, and I managed to get 60k miles out of my set. Not bad at all!

But, the cheapest I could find them (i.e, at a store, not counting buying spares from people here) was about $170 each. Not the cheapest tire. And, they're not particularly quiet. And, you're limited in size.

If you're wanting more ground clearance, you need taller tires. If you're off-road in mud a lot, you need different tires. And, I was wanting to watch the funds spent at the time.... So....

If they suit your needs, leave 'em be.

I didn't buy them again, for the above reasons. But... I didn't get rid of them, I kept them 'til I wore them out, then went to the Dunlops... yes, I like them better, but you might not.

Goodrich M/Ts don't exactly whisper, either. Nor do those Dunlop tires most people like to get.

The reason most people don't get XPCs is because it's not really a specialised off-road tire. It's a damn good tire - the best in its segment - but ultimately designed as an all-season M+S road tire.

Too bad M+S stands for "Mud and Snow" and as I said before, I don't think they're that good in either element. So that means they kind of failed meeting their design goal. While I think it's a darn fine street tire (except for winters around here - but not bad if you don't need and off-road tire) they're not for people that like to have better traction off-road.

If they suit your needs now, I say keep them as they last a long time. At least mine don't seem to wear much and even though I want something different, I won't throw them away untill they're bald. Unless somebody buys them from me first.

My .02:

I replaced my originals after 60,000 miles with the same thing. $141 per at Costco. Maybe it's Colorado, but I like them in snow, in rocks they're fine, and it's hard to find mud around here.
