Hey Guys.
I've recently noticed a whining noise coming from my alternator (so i think). It gets louder as the rpms increase. It sounds almost like the whine you'd hear from a bad power steering pump (but it isn't (so i think).
Has anyone encountered this?
What could it be.
It is accompanied with a significant power loss

Check the Belt or Belt tensioner or listen at both ends of the alternators bearings, have helper run the eng at High rpm and listen, PS watch the hair.. This is where that stethoscope comes in handy Go for a visit to your GP first HEHE

Could be that your bearings are beginning to go bad. Might be time for a new alternator. If it's just the bearings, you might be able to find a local rebuilder who can put new bearings in for you. The front and rear bearings are really only good for maybe 100K miles before they start to go. Some earlier, some later.

Alternator Reman shops can repress no problem, Also have new brushes. The DiscoI alternator is one of the easiest i have ever removed. Good luck

...and if you go offroad and get some muddy/sandy water up on your alternator, the bearing life is really reduced. Mine lasted ~50K before it started grinding itself up.
Rebuild is cheap. Replace with aftermarket requires a little fabbing but is the way to go if you're running a winch or a lot of candlepower !

...I'm using a PPW 160A unit.
It uses a common VR that's available at any auto parts store, is warranteed for life and can be fitted with the welder box any time you need/want it.
ALMOST fit right on. You have to make one bracket for 4.0L engines with serp belts. Oh, and make sure he sends you the pulley with the correct number of drive grooves.

Oh, and it sounds like an A-10 spooling up when you rev the engine.
hehehe cool

On the PPW 160A unit, Never used a trail welder
How many amps will this put out for the welder?

Read all about it.

It's a pulsed DC unit so it's hard to compare with other welders.
