In AWD fords and other makers if the tire diameter difference is greater than 1/4 inch the transferr case can be damaged. I want to replace the front tires on my 97 while waiting on the rear tires to arrive. Will this cause a problem with the 97 disco

Don't!

You've got a good handle on it, it is a BAD thing to have different size tires on a Disco, since it is a full-time 4x4.

Wait 'til you get your other tires, then install them all at once.

Uhhhhh, actually, although not recommended, it shouldn't make a difference. The center (unlocked) diff will take care of that issue, won't it ??

Although, the center diff is not very rugged. People have blown them up by not locking up in mud and doing a lot of wheel spinning.

I'd be much more concerned with handling issues !

I've wondered about this too. In reference to my wanting to have big 265/75s, with the stock 255/65 for a spare. How bad of an idea is this? Obviously, if I had to put on the spare, it's back home I go, but for the short back-out on the trail, and the freeway drive home, is that bad?

I would try it, Leslie's right, do them all at once. I still have my factory spare and if i get a flat i'm SOL.

Why would you not want the spare to be the same size?

Curious I guess...

Like the earlier post says, keep all tires the same size. The Center Diff will not take care of the problem. If you have to run different tire sizes for any reason, remove one driveshaft (the one to the wheel with the different size tire) and lock the center diff. That will get you home.

Thanks,
Mike B.
