I just sourced some 95 Disco axles and need to pull off the pinion flange in order to install some 4.75 gears and lockers. I took off the rotoflex assembly, but the pinion flange has a cap with a large nipple (that has a small threaded hole). I know that LR has a special tool to get this POS off, but I want to do it myself. Bill at GBR suggested heating the flange, and using the appropriate size tap and slide hammer to get it out (although he said this is a major PITA). Any thoughts on this subject?

Thanks,

Bill R.

Bill , I use a short section of pipe thats "ID" is just a little bigger then the centering pins largest portion and a few inches longer. Then you need some threaded rod that will screw into the end of the thing (Cant remember the size off hand) that will stick out a few inches once screwed all the way into the snout of the pin. Then get a piece of strap thats pretty thick (3/8-1/2) and drill a hole right in the center of it. The strap has to be a little longer then the "OD" of the pipe.
Once ya got all this together screw the rod in there then slide the section of tubing over it , then slide the strap down on it with the rod in the hole in the strap , put one decent sized washer on and then a nut. As you crank the nut down with a wrench the centering pin will come right out. Yes , heating the flange up a little will make this happen easier. I dislike the whole slide hammer method... If that isnt clear let me know I will take a digital of the tool I have here..
