Blinker Tech

Got fast blinker syndrome? (96 - 99 Discovery)

by Marc Olivares and Steve Rupp

For those of you who have upgraded your rear bumpers, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Click-Click-Click-Click-Click-Click… it’s enough to drive you insane.

Steve Rupp came up w/ a clever relay swap to bring that annoying fast blinker under control.

The conversion is quite simple and very tidy. It consists of an EP-26 Flasher relay and 4 pig tails of wire w/ male and female spade connectors at each end.

The relay on the left is the new EP-26 flasher relay compared to the factory flasher relay on the right.

This is the new EP-26 flasher relay w/ pigtails installed.

Pigtails are necessary due to the larger size of the new relay.

At the time of this Tech, a smaller relay has not been found.

The fuse block where the factory relay is located is below the steering wheel and to the left side of the panel.

The relay is located on the lower left hand corner of the fuse block

(The large black rectangular looking boxy thing on the lower left)

Removing the relay can be difficult so take your time. There is a retaining clip on the top and bottom of the relay that must be held open in order to remove the relay from the block. Special tools are not necessary. Fingers will work, but be cautious.

Here is the fuse block w/ the relay removed.

Now with the factory relay out simply install the new relay in it’s place. Note that the pigtails enable the larger EP-26 relay to plug into the fuse block. Once connected, simply tuck the relay between the door panel and fuse block.

Close the access panel door and you're done.

Now enjoy the soothing sounds of a normal flasher.
