Relocating Winch Solenoid

This article documents my experience relocating the winch solenoid pack for the Ramsey RE12000.  Even though this is specific to my setup, it should provide a few ideas to those considering similar modifications.  When I was reworking my winch in the ARB bar, I decided that relocating the solenoid pack would make the winch install more manageable and at the same time place some of the vulnerable electrical parts in a safer spot.  While relocating the solenoid pack, I also installed a driver operable switch to control the winch.

Tools Used:

·        Drill

·        Spanners and Screwdrivers

Parts Used:

·        3 x 5’ lengths of #2 gauge wire

·        12volt intermittent switch

·        12 volt isolator switch ( amperage)

First, I removed the solenoid from the winch paying careful attention to record on paper the position of each electrical connection in relation to the solenoid pack.  Then I ran the 3 x 5 foot lengths of #2 wire from the winch to where I wanted to relocate the solenoids by the air intake (5 feet was just enough).  I also ran the hot wire from the battery to the solenoid pack across the front of the radiator—the wire can be tucked down out of sight.  I placed an electrical cut off switch before the solenoid pack so the entire system could be turned off when not in use.  If your winch draws a lot of power, you might want a heavier duty switch.  Take note that the Discoweb sticker serves the useful purpose of sealing the gap where the remote hookup used to be.

Next I connected the remote control hookup.  I removed the front grill and drilled three holes in the top right hand corner to accommodate the female end of the plug and ran the three wires to their appropriate places on the solenoid pack.  At the same time, I ran three wires into the cab that work in parallel to the remote hookup placed on the front grill.  Next, I attached an intermittent switch to the three wires and placed it in a spare switch hole on the left hand side of the dash, just to the side mirror adjustment switch in my ’96 Disco.  This allows you to operate the winch while remaining behind the wheel, without having to run the remote control into the cab.

As always it takes me a couple of times to get things right.  When I get around to installing a second battery, I will probably have to move the solenoid pack over to the passenger fender well.  Having longer lengths of #2 wire would make that a lot easier.
