Rear lights and instrument lights are ok on parking light setting but go out when the headlights are on. Ideas anyone?

first suspect is the stalk (STC4017). they are notorious for crapping out at this age. Can be had for $50 - 129 depending on where you buy and super simple to remove/install.

I agree. My 98MY D1 did this fail when it was a couple of years old. I dismantled its multiple switch sockett, checked its contacts lubed and mounted again. Never again failed... now 19 years old...

Many thanks, both of you. It's turned out to be a combination of the contacts in the connector and the switch itself. A new switch is on it's way, thanks again.
