A few shots of what was left of my front diff when I pulled the carrier out:

She made it home 40 miles with diff lock engaged and just rear wheel drive. She's never let us down!

Was it crunchy on the way home?

Oh yeah. Surprisingly, the pumpkin wasn't damaged, although there was a good amount of crud in there, and down the axle tubes. Took some flushing to clean it all out. Will still swap out the diff fluid once i get a problem with a wheel speed sensor fixed and can get it rolling a little and the fluid moving.

Perfect time to upgrade to a locker.

Got a "new" one out of a 2000 D2 at a local Pull Your Part. The diff looks like it has almost no miles. The truck had two new CV's in it as well and a recent brake job. I saw it pop up in an app I have on my phone and figured it was worth the $3 investment and an hour of time under the truck to see what was there. Glad I did it. Total of $75.00 out the door.

This is the junkyard diff, exactly as it came out of the donor truck. Zero cleaning done at this point, just as it came out of the truck.

Ring gear close-up. You can still see the yellow gear marking compound on it, so it has almost no wear at all.

Old and "new" side-by-side. Given both trucks were manufactured within one month of each other, I'm gonna say the one on the left hasn't been in a truck since 2000.

I tend to break spider gears every few years. I keep a spare front and rear diff on the shelf for when its time I scatter another.
