Photos are of a D1. When I ran the VIN on KBB it says "1999 Land Rover Discovery SD", no mention of Series II.

You know there were 1999 D1's, right?

I assume there were 1999 d1's, but these guys are listing it as a D2 obviously. I swear I thought kbb gave me "DII" on the vin but maybe not

Low miles are a plus and interior is mostly in good shape. Price is too high, of course.

That is a D1. Call it whatever the hell you want, but nothing that I see in any of the pictures is a D2. May as well call it a Freelander.

yeah i let them know that he has it listed as a Discovery series "II" but it's actually a "I" and the idiot wrote back:

"
Thanks for your interest in our 1999 Land Rover Discovery. This vehicle is still available for sale and it runs and drives great! The vin number is the correct one to this vehicle. Is there anything that I can assist you with? Thanks!

Don't waste your time with that thing. Or any small-time used car lot, for that matter. I have a suspicion - and absolutely zero evidence to substantiate it - that the cars on those used lots are more likely to conceal big problems. If a seller can't move a car on the private market they go to a used car lot as a last resort. The used car lot won't pay what a private party will, but the owner either knows there is something big wrong and wants to pass the hot potato OR is so desperate to sell that they are willing to accept the smaller payout. Either way, I don't want to buy that car. Wait until you find a seller who knows what he has and can answer questions about it intelligently.

I have seen some people in the UK reference the 94-98 D1 as a D2. They justify it as: it is a 2 generation D1 with facelift and revised interior. They then reference the 99-04 as a Discovery series 2. Still not right but try to argue with someone on the other side of the pond when you are on this side.

It wasn't just the facelift. LR introduced the 300TDI engine partway through the D1 lifespan. Would have been about 1994. Still, not enough to justify a name change. The NAS D2 got a different engine in 2003-2004 and it was still the D2.

Ive encountered this facia update confusion too, but it was domestic auto parts store cashiers trying to sell me the wrong air filter.

This nomenclature is actually 100% correct, at least for a Discovery 1999-2004. The factory badges say as much. There's one on my 2003.

None of this is as bad as the folks that type D2 or Disco 2 as D11. DII would be fine, but D11 makes me want to throw things.
