Looked at a 4Runner yesterday, and I have a question

What's the latest non-predator style year for the LX/GX?

As for the GX the 470 never has a predator front end, always looked good more in a second. The 460 didn't have the predator front end from 2010-14. I love mine and was a really hard decision between the 460 and 470. In the end I just wanted an upgrade on the interior.

Now, the GX460 might has well of been a 2005 Discovery in my opinion. It's rear barn door design and rear height with lots of head room were very similar to the series II. What was different was the reliability and the... reliability. The 460's are tanks and beefed up (just like the Discovery are very capable trucks).

This? I'm sure it's great in many ways, but is it just me or does it look a bit girly? Reminds me of my wife's old RAV4 and all the Highlanders the grandma's drive around here.

These are much larger than Rav 4's lol. They are everywhere, you must have seen them.

Drove a few of these recently. Impressed on all fronts but price. Looked better in person to me. Might pick one up if the new Defender, Bronco, etc are disappointments. Nice to have both "clean" and "dirty" cargo areas.

Nissan's are part Rover. All the stupid shit brakes. Window switches, regulators, brake switch, rear defroster. Even the glove box light blows prematurely. Maybe they have their act together, this was my (and a few others) experience 15 years ago. I was a very short lived pathfinder owner.... Very, very short. Don't give me shit.

I've got 2007 4-runner and 2007 tundra. Only complaint on the 4 runner is you can't switch off the traction control without engaging CDL. In snow it slips and cuts power to the point where you just sit there with foot on floor not moving. Switch on the CDL and it's actually quite capable. There is some road noise from the cargo area but the premium sound system masks it well enough.

I love the tundra. The 5.7 is a beast. I tow a lot, haul a lot, and travel a lot. 170,000 miles with just routine maintenance, tires, brakes, minor stuff.

Both the Toyotas are great for running to the parts store to pick up pieces to keep the Disco working.

Has anyone checked out the ZR2 Colorado? Have been seeing more recently including a diesel. The factory tires are awkwardly small but it looks sharp and well equipped. Will be interesting to see what the new Ranger has to offer as well

The same people who build water- and metanol-injected engines for tractor pulls: corn farmers. All 3/4 to 1-ton fullsize pickups with diesels are in the $70K+ territory, it's just a matter of personal preference for them.

Speaking of GX: it is known around the world as Land Cruiser Prado. Very solid 4x4, even if with IFS. Much more useful than the whale of LC200.

The Prado was the video I posted, not sure if you noticed but it backs your opinion nicely.

10 years ago it was a darling of SOF in South America, don't know if it is still the case.
It is a true 4x4 - meaning it is not a station wagon on a pickup frame with a transfer case bolted underneath, but the t-case is mostly tucked between the framerails, making the diffs offset to the side. In the ROW, it comes without any of Lexus' doodads, but with e-locker or two on top of very functional transfer case.

They are cramped on the inside, just my opinion. I'm a big dude though.

It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, in that regard.

Defenders are tighter, I'd wager; but it's been a while since I drove one. The one thing I never liked about them is I always feel just a few inches too close to the passenger, and my shoulder bumps all over the damned door.

I'm 5'7" but I'm pretty wide up top. There are indeed vehicles that I cannot comfortably drive, given certain backrest designs. Now that I'm feeling better I'm not fitting in some seats again. The curse of being short and meaty... The bolster cutouts meant for shoulders are just a little too high for your own.

Same goes for the backrests on gym machines, if they're not adjustable.

Some cars just don't offer a seating position with good visibility for someone less than 6 feet or so, and I've never been ashamed to raise a seat with spacers an inch to improve the driving position. I don't know why more people don't do that.

Every Defender I've driven has made me feel like a giant inside. I don't know how the hell some of you people drive them.

Cheers,

Kennith

I see the GX460 uses 18" wheels with about the same max non-lift tire size as the LR3/4. Engine performance looks similar. The reliability is tempting vs the LR3/4 but it still looks like a big grandma car, tows less, costs about 50% more, and has less cargo and people space. It ticks some of the right boxes, but doesn't quite do it for me.

You may want to test drive a 460 or 470 for the interior room alone. Lexus does a good job with mixing the analog controls with the touch screen. If you want to do it the old way with buttons, do it. If not, use the touch screen. I would say yota but as mentioned their step up from the 4runner (Prado) isn't imported to the states. If you're set on new it will be the 4runner. I was able to find a really nice low miles 2012 460 after searching for months. They don't come on the market much and when they do they disappear quick. My father finally broke down and bought a new Lexus GS after his 2002 almost hit 300K. You can't argue with the shelf life that's for sure. Best of luck with your search.
