I am selling my '04 Disco SE. Looking for an honest assessment of value before I do the Craigslist thing. I want to sell the truck but don't want to leave too much money on the table. I see some people advertising these for insane numbers, $12-$20k, I know it's not worth that but I don't want to sell for $2k and have regret. .

I have a '04 Disco that I bought 5 years ago for daughter #3. She drove it for 3 years before going to college, then #4 took it until we just bought her a new car. It has 95k miles, very clean and absolutely rust free, it has always been a Georgia or Florida car.

I replaced the head gasket a year ago, or about 3k miles ago. Typical head rebuild, new valve guide seals, tanked and decked the head, new gasket, head bolts, all new manifold gaskets, etc. I also put in a brand new radiator, water pump, hoses, thermostat, idler pulleys, belts, etc.

I put in a new headliner, black, and reupholstered the door panels, fixed the sunroof leaks, new hoses, everything works like new absolutely no issues. Leather seats are good, no tears but typical wear.

It is gray paint, there was some fading on the roof and hood so I put a vinyl wrap on the whole car, it is 3M matte charcoal gray, looks pretty nice. It has new tires, tinted windows, brakes are new, new CPS etc.

It has a Atlantic British steel front bumper and rear bumper.

Any ideas where I should start? I am thinking $5k, maybe start at $6?

Anyway since everyone on the internet loves to tell other people how little their shit is worth i figured this may be a good opportunity to let everyone open fire. The car is in Florida, if anyone is interested.

Thanks.

I would ditch the wrap before you list it.

I really like this truck. It's clean. There's got to be what.....maybe a handful of really clean, unmolested, sub-100K mile 04s out there? I'd keep the wrap, upsell the stock nature of it and low miles, of course upsell the hell out of the head gasket job and renewed cooling system, and throw a line out in the water at $9800 and then see if you get any hits.

Your observation is accurate, especially so on this website. Getting some input on valuation will be helpful, but a more useful question is "Where should I sell my truck to get the most money for it?" I don't actively track a lot of the specialty auction sites so I can't offer specific recommendations, but there is a theory that for every car there is a buyer - it's just a question of connecting them. Cast a wide net - somebody out there is looking for exactly what you're selling and is willing to pay good money for it. Ask for more than you think it will fetch. If you're out of line you'll figure it out and can lower the price, but maybe you'll get lucky. Buying old Land Rovers is not a rational act. Paying a lot for them, even less so, but it happens.

I still like Bring A Trailer for nice condition Discoveries, seems that's the hottest place for them on the internet right now.

For $100 and some decent time spent with a camera taking photos you could come out better than CL. If it were me I'd try to see if they'd take it as a listing - hint, the better quality pictures you can float and the better quality write up with list of what was done then the better chances you'll have that they'd list it.

If you set a reserve at a price and don't meet it, no harm no foul, you're out $100. Generally they'll work with you on setting the reserve.

Look at the ones that sold, the ones that didn't. Look at some of the comments, look at the photos (esp of the ones that sold).

Worth a try! It might be hit or miss but while ebay is full of $15k Discoveries, there's absolute history on BaT with verified buyers.

Agreed. I think that is what is making it difficult for me, there are so many $10-$20 Discos on Ebay and even AT that I wonder are they really bringing that? Seems impossible to me but hey look at the G-Wagons. I don't need to make a killing I just need to get it out of my driveway to a good owner who will appreciate it for the nice truck it is.

Thanks for the info, to everyone who has offered feedback.

Remove the wrap and get a better condition hood from someone like Will Tillery. Stock paint, if in good condition, will be better than a wrap that screams the paint is not good underneath. I'd personally put the bumper back to stock on the front as well, but that could go either way. People get more excited over a completely stock great original condition vehicle and get the level of enthusiasm required to drive an auction above where it should be. Just like all the white Discoveries on bringatrailer that are decked out with safari racks, white steel rims, and a camel trophy brush bar or ARB bumper, they have the look and you could make above what yours should actually be worth.

Agree with everything you have said, however that is way more work than I have time for honestly. I am just looking to move it out of my driveway, We just bought a new house and my garage is full of boxes and my tools are in storage. To try to find a hood and front bumper would be beyond my capability right now, but I agree with your point.

I am really thinking I would be happy to get $7k for it, and would probably take less if someone were to make it easy for me. I am not rich by any means but at that point in life where time is slightly more valuable than money, at least for the moment.

I still have my stock ‘04 front bumper but the lower hanging plastic pieces have been trimmed. Other than that it’s in good shape as I recall. I could dig it out if you think you might want it.

My useless 2 cents...
I would NEVER buy a truck with modifications.
It's either been beaten to hell and back off road, or it's a poseur mobile.
The poseur truck would "probably" be mechanically ok.
But those jacknuts tend to also fuck with shit they don't understand.

For me, stock is the ticket.

Headliner Express, great company. They send you the headliner material and 2 cans of spray adhesive, all you need is to drop the headliner and spend 5 hours removing the old foam off the fiberglass mold, then apply the new headliner cloth and re-install the whole thing back in the truck. Oh, and make sure the sunroof drain isn't leaking, because then you will have to drop the whole thing back down again and repair the sunroof drain so that you don't ruin your brand new headliner. Or so I have heard.

Sold the truck this afternoon, Craigslist. $6500 and had a few other people interested. It is amazing how much the value of these trucks has risen in the last 5 years or so, either way I am happy it is out of the driveway.

A part of me wishes I could keep it but I think I will focus on buying more motorcycles and guns and less cars. Take up less space.

Thanks for the feedback.
