Disco 1 speedometer issues

Speedometer works fine for a while, then jumps to over 130 mph and sticks there, when i get to 50, it now reads about 90. so its going backwards. Eventually it will go back to zero and either hangs there, or works as it should. VSS is obvious suspect, but not changed yet.
Any one seen this ?

VSS can sometimes be dead out of the box-I would def do as WaltNYC suggested and unplug VSS all together and see what effect it has.

Update:

After the VSS was changed, the speedo was still pegged at 140+. Oometer never stopped working (even when pegged) and coorectly.

Got back on the freeway this morning and when I hit 70mph the speedo came down from 140 to 70. Must be the sensor getting enough juice to reset the speedo.

All is well again,

Wow, that's a new one to me. Glad it sorted itself out.

I can't imagine what would be going through my head as I drove down the road looking at a speedo pegged to 140mph. Freaky indeed.
