I upgraded my diff to a Detroit some time ago. This summer however I snapped the short side rear axel. I have read that when this happens your Detroit breaks as well. if so why?

Yeah, you need to pull it out and look at it. I know guys who have broke several axles without hurting their locker, other guys aren't so lucky.

You won't be able to "look at it" and see if it's broken. You have to take it apart. Sometimes the tention spring breaks, and other times the clutch packs explode.

Stick a new axle in there and go for a drive. You'll know if it's broken before you get out of the driveway.
