So I see a 2000 discovery on CL advertised with a 4.6 and he's asking $5K. A reasonable starting price if its a recent professional install. I was thinking maybe he would take less. The add gets alittle wierd when he states how fuel efficent the 4.6 is and it would be a great commuter car. I email him and ask if he had the 4.6 installed because if he didn't then the truck still has the standard 4.0 in it. This is what he replys with.

"Discovery I had the 4.0 engine and when BMW changed it to the Discovery II they used the 4.6L which is the same 4.0 Lincoln engine block bored out with the Bosch air cooling system on American Models/ so this engine was factory on this Land Rover... The engine was rebuilt in Richmond and I have the receipts from the work and repair history. The 4.6 was standard on the Disco's in 2000 (I think '99 was the last year they used the 4.0 on Disco's) and eventually took over the Range Rover line in 2002 and onward. It's a much more fuel efficient and remarkably quicker engine than the old 4.0.... I used to have an 1996 Disco I (Green) and she was a great truck and also very reliable but a bit sluggish. When BMW bought Land Rover Bosch engine modification and new Bosch transmission was part of their overhaul of the Disco II. This is a really nice truck I just don't really need it any longer. I am showing it Sunday morning and you are more than welcome to come check it out if you are more than welcome. "

I got a similar response...

The Land Rover dealership in Richmond pointed out a small oil leak on the lower head gasket at the 150K checkup and diagnosed it needed a new head gasket. It was replaced by a reputable Rover specialist and I have the receipt from the work. I also have the original bill of sale from the truck and ALL repair history for the last several years.

The original bill of sale states that this truck was built by Land Rover and sold with this engine. Not all the info you find online about Land Rovers is correct... when Ford bought Rover from BMW in 2000 they made their own modifications and the larger engine was the major change. It was used on some of the Range Rover models in 2000 and the Disco from then on... it's a much faster engine and a upgraded Bosch transmission..... I am showing it on Saturday and sunday if you want to come see it.. I've had a bunch of emails I imagine it will go fast..

thanks,
dale

I had responded to him trying to tell him that 2000 disco's did not come from the factory with 4.6s and that if he never had the 4.6 installed then its a 4.0 and this is what he said.

"There were two engines for these trucks... you have the older model... SD I assume/ This truck has it's original engine it is the same engine you have in your 2004. I can send you a picture of the engine and again I can also show the original bill of sale for this truck.... As I said before it's a very nice truck and rare with the better of the two engines... again I have the original bill of sale/ receipts for engine work/ repair history including the 150K checkup by Land Rover. They begun using that engine in the second half of 2000 when Ford took over the company from BMW and never looked back. This is a far superior engine and vehicle that the older 4.o.. In other countries Rover used the TDi or TD5 with a manual clutch for these truck not a V8 (I also used to own a 200TDi which I bought from England)... It's difficult to get very accurate info from websites but I have an american vin and american bill of sale so this truck was absolutely built like this by Land Rover for those who like to a more powerful truck.

as i stated before I'll be at work today but I am showing the truck on sunday if you would like to come see it.

Thanks, and this has been a very fun round of Rover history.... dale"

I'm wondering where he's getting his info from. It sucks that someone will buy this thing thinking they are getting "the best rover engine". I'm not even going to try and tell him anything else. Maybe the truck does have a 4.6, but it's not original and if he thinks it is then he doesn't know the history of the truck like he thinks.

I dont know how many SD's, i think all of them, advertised as fully loaded with leather ect.... that all have duragrain... that stuff is worse than cloth IMO....

Tell him to put it has a 4.6 engine on the bill of sale. Then when it doesn't tell him he has to pay to have one put in.
