Got the head back from the machine shop and suspect they may have got it wrong. The valve springs have been installed nonuniform. Some have the tight end of the spring up and others down - THAT CANT BE RIGHT? I'm in my 60's but seem to recall that the tight part of the valve spring should always be at the bottom correct? Thanks.

I'm in my 60's as well, but I would think a spring would obey Hooke's Law no matter what the orientation. That's not to say there may be some application-specific subtlety I'm not appreciating.

Yes, they should be uniform. And the tight end should be on the head end.
