Hey one time I did a Time laps photo stream of an engine replacement . Thought some of you would find this interesting. Great way to spend a couple days if you have nothing planned.

I start with the wheel opening moldings and wheel house liners.

Next I start to seperate anything that stays with the body from the engine and chassis. Notice that the engine and trans harnesses will come out of the holder near the battery box and the box that contains the master cylinder. Comes aprt very easily and can be laid on top of the engine like I have them here. Heater hoses ...same deal. if it goes with the body disconnect it.

A few more pics related to the last post. Notice how the battery box and the master cylinder box have been removed for access. they come apart in sections and the only part of them that stays on the vehicle is the outer part of the floor of each box.

After the engine comparment is ready for its seperation the chassis is next. In the wheel wells we need to disconnect the brake lines from the body and get any ground straps and the small connectors in the brake system (wear sensors and speed signal sensors) Trans shift cable , fuel filler neck , big chassis to body connector in the left rear. the washer reservoire will stay with the frame so any harness and washer lines need to be disconnected as well. there is also an evaps line in the left rear corner thats easy to forget about. Get all the body bolts out of there and set the vehicle on the ground. Move your lift arms to the body and let the air out of a couple tires so the chassis doesnt move around while your working with that.

I like to have a couple people around when I start to lift the body off the frame. They watch or operate the lift for me so I can watch and make sure nothing was forgotten. Also helps to have someone by the radiator to rock it backward to clear the body as it's leaving.

Now the radiator can be pulled off with all the rest of what I call the coolpack as an assembly. From here the engine is just a basic engine swap. I remove the exhaust manifold on the left bank and the engine mount bracket while I support the engine with the cherry picker. This way I can get all the torque converter bolts with a 3/8 impact. Also should have mentioned I like to remove the lower bell housing bolts while the whole truck is still on the lift.

You can see that the new engine is installed because the red plugs are still in place. All the fuel system I transfer after the engine is in place. It's so easy to work on when in this state and I sit on the front tires while I do all that.

I think that"s the half way point so everything else is just the reverse of everything we have done so far. Piece of cake for a guy like yourself. With a little luch and about 2 1/2 days it will look like that last pic again. If you do this for someone else make sure they NEVER EVER see the truck apart like this. You will be doing every squeak and rattle they ever hear again.

Hope that was fun for you guys. If you wan't to see other 5.0 work being done I have a photo stream of a cylinder head job I did with the body still on the frame.

Just another day at the office.

Another 2 1/2 days at the office. Maybe if I was 30 again I could rip and tear in maybe 10 hours. Back then I did rear main and cross seals in about 5 hours. That was humping.

I'm sure you could do it but your going to need a lot of other shit. Like the engine harness and maybe some cooling system modification because the super charger has its own cooling system.

Hey Stu off topic but just curious would it be possible to put a 4.2 supercharger on a 4.4 non supercharged motor?

I think the pistons are different in the supercharged motor for lower compression. The cylinder heads are also different because the supercharged motor doesn't have variable camshaft profiling.

Ya jymmies right about all that I guess I was thinking about the whole engine as an assembly. But I never think about doing that. I think it would be cheaper to trade out of whatever you have and get something blown.

Turbos are great but I would rather be blown.

I had no idea you had to remove the body to pull these engines. Jesus.

Really not a big deal. Once the body is off its the easiest engine I've ever replaced. I feel sorry for guys who only have drive on racks and have to do it in the car. The torque converter bolts are next to impossible that way.
