On a recent trip to FL, we were upgraded to a 2018 Discovery. Less than 18k miles on it. What a piece of crap!

Interior trim was falling off and on top of massive turbo lag, it was so noisy that I actually thought it had a diesel in it when I first fired it up.

The 4.4 Yamaha V8 in my wife's 2009 XC90 is smooth as "butta", pulls like a brute and screams that beautiful V8 sound right to redline. I'll pay the extra for gas.

What has LR come to?

Pics? I'm curious to see what a rental company gave you.

Discovery Sport, not Discovery.

A rental company that we had never heard of before. Syxt? I think. Great customer service and prices and seemed to offer higher end cars, at least in Fort Myers.

Just disappointing that LR in 2018 can't outdo what Volvo accomplished in 2009, engine wise. The Yamaha actually gets decent mileage, driven normally.

Comparing an XC90 to a Discovery Sport is like comparing a Range Rover to a XC40. The Discovery Sport is the cheapest product Land Rover makes, and I'm sure a rental company has the most basic trim level. The XC90 is Volvo's flagship SUV. Also, 4 cylinder motor is never as smooth as a V8 motor.

To be clear, I'm not saying the Discovery Sport is a good car, but your comparison is not at all fair.

I hear you, but we're talking a 9 year difference. Also, there are many 4 cylinder turbo motors that are plenty smooth and don't mimic the sound of a diesel. Is it just that LR is late to the turbo game? Gas wise?

Emphasis on can. Base version of the engine produces 237hp. Which, it's worth noting, is still ~50hp more than my 4.0 GEMS V8 in my D1, and that was when it was new.

300hp from a turbo 4 cyl? You think that's new territory? What rock have you been hiding under?

If I've read correctly, the Discovery Sport 2.0 is a rebadged Ford Ecoboost engine, which in the Sport produces 234 or 286 HP depending on trim. This engine produces similar power (depending on tuning) in the Ford products. Looks like Ford got LR's TD6 for the F150, and LR got the Ecoboost.

But I'm talking about the new Inginium engine. It looks like it's pretty much solved the problems we had with the ford engine. The 2.0 that was in that rent a wreck is retired now. It was a shitty little engine. The inginium is a pretty cool little engine.

I had no idea Volvo offered this engine!

Current lineup is 4cyl's, and their future commitment is hybrid-only as they transition to all-electric.

I sold my buddy my previous car(2008 XC90) with the Yamaha V8. It now has around 275,000 miles and the engine still runs amazing. That's a great engine.

I only see two options, 237, and 286 HP.

They can tune it higher I think. It's kind of an interesting valve train. The cam lobe mechanically opens the valves. So that's the only two constants. The time the valve starts to open and the lift. Once the valve is open it is held open with oils pressure as long as it wants it. Way longer than you could keep it open with the cam lobe.
