Today while doing some work on my D2 I noticed that I have some brake fluid leaking on top of the master cylinder. It's coming out of the top center and the top back areas as you can see in the two picture links below:

Do I need a new master cylinder, or do you think I would be ok just replacing the reservoir seals?

Also what is the difference between the '99-'02 master cylinder and the '03-'04 master cylinder?

Oh and BTW.. In the pictures I it looks like there is a hole or something leaking fluid on the right, but it's not. It's just a place that had some dirt/grease that had brake fluid on it. I cleaned it off after I took the pictures...

One more question (probably a dumb question). The rave says that if you replace any of the brake components before the ABS modulator that you need to do a bleed with testbook and not just the normal way from the calipers. Is that correct, or will I be ok bleeding the brakes the old fashioned way after I replace the seals and stuff on the master cylinder?

When I installed the rebuild kit, I just bench bled the master cylinder first, then I manually bled each wheel cylinder. I haven't had any issues since then. It may not be according to the service manual, but it worked for me.

Another option for bleeding the ABS modulator is to first do your rebuild, then manual bleed. That done, take the truck on the road somewhere, and brake/turn/skid hard enough to get the modulator to modulate, ideally for each wheel, then re-bleed the system manually.

Just don't crash when trying to trigger the modulator!
